Fish Fridays: A New Catch for Malta’s Schools

Reeling in Healthy Habits: ‘Fish Fridays’ Pilot Project Launches in Malta’s Schools

Imagine the bustling school corridors of St. Aloysius College, Birkirkara. Today, it’s not just the usual chatter and laughter that fill the air, but also the tantalizing aroma of fresh fish wafting from the school canteen. This is not a one-off treat, but the start of a exciting new initiative – ‘Fish Fridays’ – set to transform school lunch menus across Malta.

A Hook for Healthier Eating

‘Fish Fridays’ is a pilot project launched by the Ministry for Education and Employment, in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and local fishmongers. The aim? To promote healthier eating habits among students and support the local fishing industry. Starting this month, four schools – St. Aloysius College, Birkirkara Primary, St. Martin’s School, and San Andrea School – will introduce a weekly fish dish into their lunch menus.

Casting the Net Wide

The project is not just about serving fish; it’s about educating students about the importance of sustainable fishing and the benefits of a balanced diet. Each ‘Fish Friday’ will come with fun, interactive lessons about the ocean’s bounty and its role in our health and environment. Local fishmongers will also get involved, sharing their knowledge and stories about Malta’s rich fishing heritage.

But how did this project come about? The idea was sparked by a group of passionate educators, nutritionists, and tourism professionals who saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone – promote healthier eating and boost the local fishing industry. With the backing of the Ministry and MTA, the project is now ready to set sail.

So, what’s on the menu? Expect a variety of locally caught fish like lampuki (dentex), spnot (white bream), and ispurr (saddled seabream), prepared in delicious, kid-friendly ways. The dishes will be cooked by the schools’ catering staff, with the help of local chefs who will ensure the fish is cooked to perfection.

Reeling in the Benefits

For students, ‘Fish Fridays’ means a chance to try something new, learn about nutrition and sustainability, and enjoy a tasty, healthy meal. For the local fishing industry, it’s a boost in demand and a chance to showcase their produce. For Malta, it’s a step towards a healthier, more sustainable future.

But don’t just take our word for it. We caught up with Mr. Joseph Vella, the head chef at St. Aloysius College, who’s excited about the project. “Fish is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids,” he said, “and it’s about time we started incorporating it into our school menus. I’m looking forward to introducing our students to the wonderful world of fish!”

So, are you ready to dive in? ‘Fish Fridays’ is just the beginning. With your support, this project could grow and transform school lunch menus across Malta. Let’s make every Friday a fish-tastic day!
