UĦM’s New Chapter: Long-Serving Director Steps Down

In the heart of Malta’s cultural scene, a significant shift is underway. After two decades at the helm, Dr. Victor Debono has resigned as the director of the University of Malta’s Institute for Cultural Heritage (UĦM). The news, which broke last week, has Malta’s cultural community, leaving many to wonder what the future holds for the prestigious institution.

Debono’s Legacy: A Cultural Powerhouse

Dr. Debono’s resignation comes after 20 years of dedicated service, during which he transformed UĦM into a leading force in Malta’s cultural scene. Under his guidance, the institute expanded its remit, becoming a hub for research, conservation, and promotion of Malta’s rich cultural heritage. From the cobblestone streets of Valletta to the ancient megalithic temples in Ġgantija, UĦM’s influence can be felt across the islands.

One of Debono’s most notable achievements was the establishment of the Master’s programme in Cultural Heritage, the first of its kind in Malta. Launched in 2008, the programme has since produced a generation of cultural heritage professionals, many of whom now hold key positions in museums, archaeological sites, and cultural NGOs across the islands.

: A New Director for UĦM

With Debono’s departure, the search is on for a new director to steer UĦM into its next chapter. The University of Malta has launched an international search, seeking a candidate with a strong academic background, proven leadership skills, and a deep understanding of cultural heritage management.

In the meantime, Dr. Maria Grazia Cassar, UĦM’s deputy director, has been appointed acting director. Cassar, a respected archaeologist and academic, brings a wealth of experience to the role. She has been instrumental in several high-profile projects, including the recent excavation and conservation of the Roman villa in Rabat.

As the cultural community looks to the future, there’s a sense of both loss and opportunity. While Debono’s departure leaves big shoes to fill, it also presents a chance for UĦM to evolve and adapt to the changing cultural scene of Malta and beyond.

Dr. Debono, reflecting on his time at UĦM, said, “It’s been an honour to serve the cultural heritage of Malta. I look forward to seeing UĦM continue to grow and thrive under new leadership.”
