UĦM’s New Chapter: Long-Serving Director Steps Down

In the heart of Valletta, at the bustling Republic Street, the offices of UĦM, Malta’s largest trade union, have been abuzz with whispers of change. After two decades at the helm, Joe Attard, the long-serving Director, has resigned, leaving the organisation and the island’s labour scene in a state of transition.

Joe Attard’s resignation, effective from the end of August, marks the end of an era. He joined UĦM in 1998, rising through the ranks to become Director in 2003. Under his leadership, the union grew from strength to strength, becoming a powerful voice for workers’ rights in Malta.

Attard’s tenure was marked by several milestones. He led UĦM through the economic boom of the late 2000s and early 2010s, advocating for fair wages and better working conditions. He was instrumental in negotiating collective agreements that improved workers’ rights and benefits. His leadership also saw UĦM expand its reach, now representing workers in various sectors, from hospitality and manufacturing to education and healthcare.

Attard’s departure comes at a time of significant change for Malta. The island is grappling with new challenges, from the impact of Brexit on its economy to the need to adapt to the digital age. UĦM, too, finds itself at a crossroads, seeking a new leader to navigate these complexities.

The search for Attard’s successor is already underway. UĦM’s Council, the union’s highest decision-making body, is expected to announce a new Director in the coming months. Whoever takes the helm will face a daunting task: filling Attard’s shoes while steering UĦM through uncharted waters.

Attard, in an interview with Hot Malta, reflected on his decision to step down. “It’s been an honour serving UĦM and Malta’s workers for these past two decades. But I believe it’s time for new leadership, new ideas, and new energy. I’m confident that UĦM will continue to thrive under the right guidance,” he said.

The resignation of a long-serving leader often signals a period of uncertainty. But for UĦM and Malta’s workers, this change could also herald a new dawn. A new Director could bring fresh perspectives, new strategies, and renewed vigour to the union’s mission.

As Malta continues to evolve, so too must its institutions.
