Malta Revives Wartime Songs in Summer Concert Series

From Bomb Shelters to Band Stands: Wartime Melodies Echo in Malta’s Summer Nights

Malta’s historic streets will resonate with a different kind of echo this summer. It’s not the rumble of World War II bombers, but the melodies of songs that kept Maltese hearts afloat during those dark days. The ‘Songs of the Forties’ concert series is set to revive the spirit of wartime Malta, one harmonious note at a time.

Revisiting a Turbulent Past

The brainchild of local historian and musician, Joe Borg, this series aims to preserve and share the musical heritage of Malta’s wartime era. “These songs are more than just tunes,” says Borg, “They’re a testament to our resilience, a reminder of how music kept our spirits high even in the face of adversity.”

The concerts will take place in unique venues around the island, from the grand St. George’s Square in Valletta to the intimate courtyard of the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu. The choice of locations is no coincidence. Each venue holds a piece of Malta’s wartime history, offering audiences a chance to connect with the past in a tangible way.

Singing Through the Shadows

The repertoire includes popular wartime songs like ‘We’ll Meet Again’, ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’, and local favourites like ‘Ħallini Ħabibti’ and ‘L-Għanja tal-Maltin’. The concerts will feature a mix of local talent, from seasoned musicians to young singers eager to keep the legacy alive.

One of the performers, 22-year-old singer-songwriter, Michelle Bartolo, shares her excitement, “I’ve grown up hearing these songs, but performing them in these historic settings will give them a whole new meaning. It’s like stepping back in time, singing through the shadows of our past.”

Preserving History, One Note at a Time

The concerts are more than just entertainment. They’re a living history lesson, a way to ensure that the stories and songs of Malta’s wartime era are passed down to future generations. Borg hopes that the series will inspire young Maltese to explore their heritage and appreciate the power of music in times of strife.

“We’re not just singing songs from the past,” Borg explains, “We’re singing our way into the future, making sure that these stories aren’t forgotten.”

The ‘Songs of the Forties’ concert series kicks off on June 15th at St. George’s Square, Valletta. For more information and ticket details, visit www.songsoftheforties.com.
