Malta’s Wartime Songs Revived in Summer Concert Series
Echoes of the Past: Wartime Melodies Resonate in Malta’s Concert Series
Imagine, if you will, the narrow, cobbled streets of Mdina’s old city, echoing not with the humdrum of everyday life, but with the haunting melodies of wartime songs. This isn’t a scene from a period drama, but a reality set to unfold this summer, as the Songs of War concert series takes centre stage.
Reviving History, One Note at a time
The brainchild of local historian and music enthusiast, Dr. Joseph Borg, this unique concert series aims to revive the music that once filled Malta’s airwaves during the Second World War. From the stirring anthems that boosted morale to the poignant ballads that soothed the soul, each concert promises a journey through time, brought to life by some of Malta’s finest vocalists and musicians.
“Malta’s role in the war is often remembered for its bravery and resilience,” says Dr. Borg, “but the music that accompanied those dark days is often forgotten. This series aims to change that, one melody at a time.”
From Radio Malta to the Grandmaster’s Palace
The concerts, held in collaboration with Heritage Malta, will take place in some of Malta’s most historic venues. The series kicks off at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, where the echoes of wartime broadcasts once filled its grand halls. Other venues include the St. Lawrence Church in Rabat and the St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina.
Each concert will feature a mix of local and international hits, from Malta’s own Ħalluħiħu to the British wartime classic, We’ll Meet Again. The concerts will also include lesser-known gems, unearthed by Dr. Borg during his extensive research.
A Symphony of Remembrance
The concerts aren’t just about the music, though. Each event will also include talks and exhibitions, delving into the social and cultural impact of the war on Malta. “The war was a time of great hardship, but also great unity,” says Dr. Borg. “The music reflects that. It’s a story we think deserves to be told.”
The Songs of War concert series promises to be more than just a musical event. It’s a chance to remember, to reflect, and to celebrate Malta’s rich history. So, mark your calendars, and get ready to lose yourself in the echoes of the past.
