UĦM Director Resigns: A New Era Begins
UĦM’s Changing Tides: Long-Serving Director Steps Down
In the heart of Malta’s cultural scene, the University of the Maltese (UĦM) has witnessed a significant shift. After two decades at the helm, Director Dr. Joseph Aquilina has announced his resignation, effective immediately. The news, which the local academic and cultural community, has left many wondering what the future holds for Malta’s premier Maltese-language university.
A Quarter-Century of Service
Dr. Aquilina’s resignation comes on the heels of a quarter-century of service to UĦM. Appointed in 1997, he navigated the institution through its formative years, transforming it from a small, fledgling university into a strong, respected institution. Under his leadership, UĦM expanded its course offerings, attracted top faculty, and earned international recognition.
His impact is etched into the very fabric of the university. The Dr. Joseph Aquilina Library, a state-of-the-art facility nestled in the heart of Msida, stands as a testament to his commitment and vision. Yet, despite his immense contributions, Dr. Aquilina remains humble. “It’s been an honour to serve UĦM and the Maltese language,” he says, “but it’s time for new leadership to carry the torch forward.”
The Search for a Successor
The UĦM Council has already begun the search for a new director. The process is expected to be rigorous and transparent, with input sought from students, faculty, and the broader community. The ideal candidate, according to Council Chairperson Dr. Maria Grech Ganado, is someone who can build on Dr. Aquilina’s legacy while bringing fresh ideas and energy to the role.
“We’re looking for a leader who understands the unique role UĦM plays in preserving and promoting the Maltese language and culture,” she says. “Someone who can inspire our students, engage our faculty, and strengthen our ties with the community.”
: Challenges and Opportunities
The departure of Dr. Aquilina comes at a time of significant change for UĦM. The university is grappling with issues of funding, student enrollment, and the impact of technology on education. Yet, it also faces exciting opportunities, such as the potential expansion of its campus and the development of new, innovative programs.
For many, the challenge now is to ensure a smooth transition. “Dr. Aquilina’s shoes are big ones to fill,” says Prof. Albert Ganado, a long-serving faculty member. “But I have no doubt that UĦM will rise to the occasion. Our university is resilient, and our community is strong.”
As UĦM braces for a new era, one thing is clear: the spirit of Dr. Joseph Aquilina will continue to inspire and guide the university. His legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those he has touched, and in the halls of the institution he helped build.
