UĦM Director Steps Down After 13 Years
UĦM’s Changing Tides: Long-Serving Director Steps Down
In the heart of Valletta, at the historic building that houses the University of Malta’s (UĦM) main administration, a significant shift is underway. After nearly two decades at the helm, Professor Juanito Camilleri has announced his resignation as Director of the University.
News of Camilleri’s departure the academic community, leaving many to ponder the future of Malta’s highest institution of learning. The professor, known for his steady hand and visionary leadership, has been instrumental in shaping UĦM into the strong, forward-thinking institution it is today.
From Student to Steward
Camilleri’s journey with UĦM began as a student in the late 1980s. Born and raised in the quaint village of Żurrieq, he was one of the many bright young minds drawn to the University’s promise of intellectual growth and opportunity. After completing his PhD in Classics, he joined the faculty, rising through the ranks to become Dean of the Faculty of Arts in 2006.
In 2008, at the age of 42, Camilleri was appointed Director, a position he held for 13 years. His tenure was marked by significant milestones, including the implementation of the Bologna Process, which aligned UĦM with the European Higher Education Area, and the construction of the new Msida campus, a state-of-the-art facility that has transformed the University’s physical scene.
Navigating Challenges and Change
Under Camilleri’s leadership, UĦM weathered numerous storms, from financial crises to political upheavals. Yet, it was the COVID-19 pandemic that presented perhaps the most formidable challenge. Overnight, the University had to pivot to online learning, a shift that required agility and resilience.
“It was a daunting task,” Camilleri admits, “but our staff rose to the occasion. They demonstrated an incredible capacity for innovation and adaptability. It was a testament to the strength of our institution and its people.”
Despite these challenges, Camilleri remains optimistic about UĦM’s future. “The University is in a strong position. We have an excellent team of academics and administrators who are committed to driving our mission forward. I leave knowing that UĦM is in capable hands.”
: A New Chapter
As Camilleri steps down, the search for his successor is underway. The University Council, chaired by UĦM’s Rector, Professor Alfred Vella, will lead the process. Whoever takes the helm will face a daunting task, but also an exciting opportunity to shape the future of Malta’s premier institution of higher learning.
For Camilleri, the future holds new adventures. He plans to take a sabbatical, spending time with his family and exploring his passion for history and archaeology. But he’s quick to add, “I’ll always be a part of UĦM. It’s more than just an institution; it’s a community, a family. And I’m proud to have played a part in its story.”
