Malta Airport Braces for Busiest Summer Ever

Airport Brace for Summer Rush: Ditch Cars, Check Liquids

As the sun begins to beat down on our sunny island, Malta International Airport (MIA) is gearing up for what it predicts will be its busiest summer yet. With the tourist season in full swing, the airport is advising passengers to plan ahead and be prepared for longer queues and stricter security measures.

Record-Breaking Numbers Expected

MIA is bracing itself for a record-breaking summer, with passenger numbers expected to soar past the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. According to the airport’s management, this summer could see up to 7 million passengers passing through its terminals, a significant increase from last year’s 4.5 million.

This surge in passenger numbers is not just a Malta phenomenon. Airports across Europe are anticipating a similar boom, as travel restrictions ease and pent-up demand for holidays is released. However, this increased footfall presents its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to security.

Security Measures Tightened

In response to the expected influx, MIA is implementing a series of measures to ensure the safety and security of all passengers. These include increasing the number of security personnel and enhancing the use of technology to speed up the screening process.

However, passengers are also being urged to play their part. The airport is reminding travellers to be aware of the liquids rule, which allows passengers to carry liquids in their hand luggage, but only if they follow specific guidelines. Liquids must be in containers no larger than 100ml, and all containers must fit into a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag no larger than 20cm x 20cm.

MIA is also advising passengers to arrive at the airport earlier than usual, with a recommended check-in time of at least three hours before departure for long-haul flights and two hours for short-haul flights.

Public Transport and Parking

Given the expected traffic congestion around the airport, MIA is encouraging passengers to use public transport where possible. The airport is served by several bus routes, as well as the Malta Airport Express coach service, which runs every 30 minutes between the airport and Valletta.

For those who must drive, the airport is advising passengers to pre-book their parking spaces online to avoid disappointment. The airport’s Park & Ride service is also available, offering a cheaper alternative to on-site parking.

As the summer season gets underway, Malta International Airport is calling on all passengers to do their part in ensuring a smooth and secure travel experience for everyone. By planning ahead, following security guidelines, and considering alternative modes of transport, passengers can help make this summer’s travel rush a success.

“We’re looking forward to a busy and successful summer,” says a spokesperson for MIA. “But we need everyone’s cooperation to make it run smoothly. So, whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a first-time flyer, please plan ahead and follow our advice. Together, we can make this summer’s travel experience a positive one for everyone.”
