Popular Ħondoq Kiosk Facing Closure: Enforcement Notice Issued
Imagine sipping on a cold kinnie on a sweltering summer’s day, the sun beating down on Ħondoq Bay’s golden sands, as you gaze out at the crystal-clear waters. For many Malta residents and tourists alike, this idyllic scene is incomplete without a visit to the iconic Ħondoq kiosk. However, a recent enforcement notice has cast a shadow over this beloved local institution, threatening its very existence.
A Ħondoq Institution Under Threat
The Ħondoq kiosk, a staple at Ħondoq Bay since the 1960s, has been served with an enforcement notice by the Planning Authority (PA). The notice, issued in June, states that the kiosk is being operated illegally and must cease its activities immediately. The kiosk’s owner, Joseph Xuereb, has been given until the end of August to comply or face legal action.
Xuereb, a third-generation kiosk operator, is at a loss to understand the sudden enforcement. “We’ve been operating here for decades,” he says, “We’ve always paid our taxes and followed the rules. This notice has come as a complete surprise.”
The Legal Quagmire
The PA’s enforcement notice claims that the kiosk is being operated in a residential area without the necessary permits. However, Xuereb argues that the kiosk has been operating continuously since before the current zoning laws were introduced. He also points out that the kiosk is not just a business, but a Ħondoq Bay landmark, beloved by locals and tourists alike.
Xuereb is not alone in his confusion. Many Ħondoq Bay residents and regulars at the kiosk are baffled by the enforcement notice. “It’s like they’re trying to take away a piece of Ħondoq’s identity,” says Maria Grech, a local resident. “The kiosk is more than just a place to buy a drink. It’s where we meet our friends, where we bring our visitors to show them the real Malta.”
The Fight to Save Ħondoq’s Icon
Xuereb and his supporters are not going down without a fight. They have launched a social media campaign, #SaveĦondoqKiosk, to raise awareness about the issue. They have also engaged a lawyer to help navigate the complex legal scene and find a solution that allows the kiosk to continue operating.
Meanwhile, the PA has remained tight-lipped about the enforcement notice, referring all queries to their official statement. The statement reads, in part, “The Planning Authority is committed to enforcing the law and ensuring that all businesses operate within the bounds of the planning regulations.”
As the deadline for compliance looms, the future of Ħondoq Bay’s iconic kiosk hangs in the balance. But one thing is clear: the people of Ħondoq Bay, and beyond, are not ready to let this piece of Malta’s history disappear without a fight.
**“Ħondoq Bay without the kiosk is like a summer’s day without the sun,” says Xuereb, his voice filled with determination. “We won’t let that happen.”
