Four iGaming Employees Granted Bail After €250 Loan Turns Violent

In the heart of Malta’s bustling iGaming district, a €250 loan turned into a brutal brawl, leaving a man hospitalized and four colleagues behind bars. Now, the four suspects are out on bail, raising questions about the incident that through Malta’s thriving gaming industry.

From Loan to Altercation

The incident took place outside the popular gaming hub, Dragonara Casino, in St. Julian’s. According to court documents, the victim, a 32-year-old iGaming professional, had lent €250 to one of the suspects, a 28-year-old colleague. When the borrower refused to pay back the loan, a heated argument ensued, which quickly escalated into a full-blown fight.

The victim was punched and kicked, sustaining serious injuries that required hospitalization. Three other colleagues, aged between 26 and 30, joined in the assault, according to eyewitnesses. The four suspects were later arrested and charged with causing actual bodily harm.

Bail Granted Amidst Outcry

Despite the severity of the charges, the four suspects were granted bail by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech. The decision has sparked outrage among the public and the victim’s family, who argue that the bail should have been denied given the gravity of the crime.

Magistrate Frendo Dimech set bail at €1,500 each, with conditions including surrendering their passports and reporting to the police three times a week. The suspects, all residents of Sliema and Birkirkara, have since been released pending their trial.

The victim, who has since been discharged from hospital, is recovering at home. He told Hot Malta, “I never thought my colleagues could turn on me like this over a small loan. I just want justice and to move on with my life.”

Industry Reacts: Zero Tolerance for Violence

Malta’s iGaming industry, a significant contributor to the local economy, has swiftly condemned the incident. The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) released a statement expressing zero tolerance for such behavior, stating that it “undermines the professionalism and integrity” of the industry.

Local gaming companies have also distanced themselves from the incident, with one spokesperson telling Hot Malta, “This is not reflective of our company culture. We expect our employees to uphold the highest standards of conduct, both in and out of the workplace.”
