Cashlogy Marks 10 Years of Revolutionising Payments in Malta
Cashlogy’s Decade of Revolutionising Payments in Malta
Imagine this: it’s 2012, and you’re trying to split the bill at a bustling restaurant in Paceville. You’re juggling cash, cards, and a calculator, trying not to lose your friends in the process. Now, fast forward to today. You’re at the same restaurant, but this time, you’re settling the bill with a simple tap on your phone. Welcome to the world of Cashlogy, Malta’s homegrown payment revolution.
Cashlogy, the brainchild of local tech company Kintech, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Launched in 2012, it was one of the first mobile payment systems in Malta, and it’s been changing the way we pay ever since.
From Concept to Reality
Kintech’s journey began in 2002, when founders Mario Vella and Martin Bonnici saw the potential of mobile technology. They started developing software solutions, but it was their 2008 trip to the Mobile World Congress that sparked the idea for Cashlogy.
“We saw mobile payments taking off in other countries, and we thought, ‘Why not Malta?'” recalls Vella. “We started working on Cashlogy, and by 2012, we were ready to launch.”
Cashlogy: A Malta Success Story
Cashlogy’s launch was a breakthrough. It allowed users to pay bills, send money to friends, and even top up their prepaid cards using their mobile phones. It was a hit, especially among the younger crowd, who embraced the convenience and ease of use.
But Cashlogy wasn’t just about convenience. It also brought financial inclusion to many. “We’ve seen people who didn’t have bank accounts start using Cashlogy to pay their bills,” says Bonnici. “It’s been rewarding to see the impact we’ve had on people’s lives.”
Today, Cashlogy is used by over 100,000 Maltese, processing millions in transactions every year. It’s integrated with local banks, utility providers, and even the Malta Public Transport system. It’s become a part of Malta’s digital fabric, a testament to Kintech’s vision and perseverance.
And it’s not just Malta that’s taken notice. Cashlogy has expanded its services to Gozo and even won awards internationally, including the GSMA Global Mobile Awards for Best Mobile Financial Service in 2014.
: Cashlogy 2.0
As Cashlogy turns 10, Kintech is looking to the future. They’re working on Cashlogy 2.0, an upgraded version of the app that promises to be faster, more intuitive, and packed with new features.
“We’ve come a long way, but there’s still so much more we can do,” says Vella. “We’re constantly innovating, always looking for new ways to make life easier for our users.”
And innovate they will. With Kintech at the helm, Malta’s payment scene is set to evolve even further. So, the next time you’re splitting the bill at your favourite restaurant, remember to thank Cashlogy for making your life just a little bit easier.
