Mdina Palazzo to Become Boutique Hotel
Mdina’s Historic Palazzo Set for New Life as Boutique Hotel
Imagine strolling through Mdina’s narrow, cobbled streets, the scent of orange blossoms filling the air. Now, picture staying in a piece of history, with vaulted ceilings, antique furniture, and a story that dates back centuries. This could soon be a reality as the Planning Authority (PA) has given the green light for the conversion of a historic palazzo in Mdina into a boutique hotel.
From Noble Residence to Boutique Charm
The 16th-century Palazzo De Piro, located in the heart of Mdina, will undergo a transformation that promises to retain its historic character while offering modern comforts. The project, led by local architect Richard England, aims to convert the palazzo into a 24-room boutique hotel, complete with a restaurant and rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Mdina, the ‘Silent City’, is no stranger to such transformations. Many of its palazzos have been converted into museums, restaurants, and private residences, breathing new life into the ancient city. However, this project stands out due to its scale and the palazzo’s unique history. Built in the late 1500s, Palazzo De Piro was once home to the noble De Piro family and later served as a seminary.
Preserving History, Embracing the Future
The PA’s approval comes with conditions to ensure the preservation of the palazzo’s historic features. These include retaining the original stone facade, vaulted ceilings, and internal courtyards. The project also aims to restore the palazzo’s grandeur, with plans to uncover hidden architectural details and restore original features.
For architect Richard England, this project is a labor of love. “Mdina’s palazzos are a testament to our rich history,” he says. “This project is about respecting that history while creating a space that will attract visitors from around the world.”
What’s Next for Palazzo De Piro?
The project is expected to take around two years to complete, with works set to begin later this year. Once completed, the boutique hotel promises to offer a unique experience, blending Mdina’s historic charm with modern amenities.
For locals and visitors alike, this project offers an exciting glimpse into Mdina’s future. A future where history and modernity coexist, offering a new way to experience one of Malta’s most iconic cities.
As Mdina’s Mayor, Dr. Paul Schembri, puts it, “This project is not just about creating a hotel. It’s about creating an experience, a story that will draw visitors to Mdina and help us preserve our heritage for future generations.”
So, the next time you find yourself in Mdina, keep an eye on Palazzo De Piro. It’s not just a building; it’s a piece of history ready to welcome you with open doors.
