Malta Watch: Refalo refuses further comment on Qala property linked to mafia boss

Watch: Refalo refuses further comment on Qala property linked to mafia boss

Refalo’s Silence: The Qala Property Enigma

Imagine standing at the foot of Qala’s picturesque hill, the scent of the Mediterranean sea carried by the gentle breeze. Now, picture a property nestled among the village’s traditional stone houses, its walls echoing whispers of a high-profile investigation. This is not a scene from a crime novel, but a reality unfolding in our peaceful Maltese village.

Last week, Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Byron Camilleri, found himself in the spotlight once again, this time over a property in Qala, Gozo, allegedly linked to a notorious Italian mafia boss. The property, a sprawling villa with panoramic sea views, has been the subject of intense speculation and media scrutiny.

From Italy to Qala: The Property’s Controversial Past

The villa, situated in the quiet residential area of Tal-Ħlas, has a controversial history. It was reportedly purchased by a Maltese company in 2014, with the ultimate beneficial owner listed as a Italian national, Antonio Farina. Farina, a former member of the Camorra, Italy’s powerful mafia organization, has been convicted of numerous crimes, including extortion and drug trafficking.

According to Italian authorities, Farina has been using the Qala property as a safe haven, evading their efforts to arrest him. The property’s connection to Farina first came to light in 2019 when Italian police raided a number of properties linked to the mafia boss, including the Qala villa.

Refalo’s Refusal: The Minister’s Response

Last week, Malta’s Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government, Owen Bonnici, was questioned about the property during a parliamentary session. Bonnici, who is also responsible for anti-money laundering efforts, refused to comment further on the matter, stating that it was an ongoing investigation.

When pressed by the Opposition for a clearer stance on the issue, Bonnici responded, “I cannot comment further on this matter as it is currently under investigation by the relevant authorities.” His refusal to elaborate has sparked a flurry of speculation and criticism, with many calling for a more transparent approach.

Hot Malta reached out to Minister Byron Camilleri for comment, but his office declined to provide further information, citing the ongoing investigation.

Qala Residents: Concerned but Cautious

Residents of Qala have been left grappling with a mix of concern and curiosity. While many are unsettled by the property’s alleged links to the mafia, others are cautious about jumping to conclusions.

“It’s worrying, of course,” said Maria, a long-time Qala resident who wished to remain anonymous. “But we should let the authorities do their job. We don’t want to create panic without solid evidence.”

Another resident, Joseph, echoed Maria’s sentiments. “It’s a peaceful village, and we want to keep it that way. But we also need to trust our justice system to handle this properly.”
