Gozo Gets New Bone Density Machine

Gozo’s Bone Health Boost: New Density Machine Arrives at General Hospital

Imagine this: A grandmother from Għajnsielem, Gozo, no longer needs to travel to Mater Dei Hospital for a simple bone density test. This is now a reality, thanks to the recent arrival of a state-of-the-art bone density machine at Gozo General Hospital.

What’s New in Gozo?

The new machine, a Hologic Horizon A densitometer, is a significant upgrade from the previous equipment. It uses advanced technology to measure bone mineral density (BMD) with enhanced precision and speed. This means quicker results and more accurate diagnoses for patients.

Dr. Joseph Mifsud, the hospital’s Medical Director, expressed his enthusiasm about the new acquisition. “This machine will greatly improve our ability to diagnose and manage osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions in our patients,” he said.

Why the Excitement?

Osteoporosis is a silent disease that weakens bones, making them more likely to break. It’s a growing concern in Malta, with an estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 at risk. Early detection through bone density tests is crucial for prevention and treatment.

Until now, Gozo residents had to travel to the main island for such tests, adding inconvenience and cost to their healthcare journey. The new machine at Gozo General Hospital addresses this issue, making healthcare more accessible and convenient for the local community.

How Does It Work?

The Hologic Horizon A uses dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technology to measure bone density. It’s a quick, non-invasive procedure that exposes patients to minimal radiation – about the same as a day’s natural background exposure.

Patients lie on a padded table while the machine scans their body, typically focusing on the hip and spine. The results are then compared to the bone density of a healthy young adult to determine if the patient has osteoporosis or is at risk of developing it.

With this new machine, Gozo General Hospital is now equipped to provide top-notch bone health services to its patients, right on the island.
