Malta’s Agricultural Future: Have Your Say
Farmers & Foodies: Your Voice Matters in Malta’s Agricultural Future
Imagine strolling down Republic Street, the heart of Valletta, and instead of bustling shops, you find yourself surrounded by lush farmlands, the scent of fresh produce filling the air. This could be Malta’s future, and you have a say in shaping it.
Malta’s Agricultural Crossroads: A Policy in the Making
The Malta Government has thrown open the doors to public consultation on its national agriculture policy. This isn’t just about farmers; it’s about every Malta resident who loves fresh, local produce, or wants to see our islands become greener and more self-sufficient.
Malta’s agricultural sector is at a crossroads. With only 1.2% of our land dedicated to farming, we’re one of the least agricultural countries in Europe. Yet, our farmers are resilient, producing a surprising variety of crops and livestock. Now, the government wants to know: how can we support and grow this sector?
What’s on the Table? A Menu of Possibilities
The draft policy, titled ‘Agriculture 2030’, paints a picture of Malta’s agricultural future. It’s a menu of possibilities, including:
- Increasing the amount of land dedicated to agriculture.
- Encouraging more young people to take up farming.
- Promoting sustainable farming practices and renewable energy.
- Boosting local produce in schools and public institutions.
- And even, dare we dream, creating a ‘Malta Food Valley’ – a hub for local food production and tourism.
Your Voice, Your Future: How to Have Your Say
So, how can you get involved? The public consultation is open until 20th August. You can:
- Read the draft policy and submit your feedback online at consultations.gov.mt.
- Attend one of the public meetings. The first is on 27th July at the Ministry for Gozo in Victoria.
- Or, if you’re a farmer or agribusiness owner, join the dedicated stakeholder meetings.
Remember, this is your chance to shape Malta’s agricultural future. Whether you’re a farmer, a foodie, or just someone who loves seeing green spaces in our urban scene, your voice matters.
As Malta’s Agriculture Minister, Clint Camilleri, puts it, “This policy is about creating a sustainable future for our farmers and ensuring that Malta continues to have a vibrant agricultural sector.” So, let’s make it a future we can all be proud of.
