Imagine a classroom filled with the zesty aroma of freshly grated ginger. This isn’t a culinary arts class, but a science lesson at St. Martin’s College in Msida. Here, students are not just learning about ginger, they’re experiencing its health benefits firsthand.

Ginger: More Than a Spice

Ginger, a humble root often associated with Christmas pudding and gingerbread, is making waves in the health and wellness scene. It’s packed with antioxidants, has anti-inflammatory properties, and can help digestion. But how do you teach this to teenagers?

Enter Ms. Maria Camilleri, a biology teacher at St. Martin’s College. She’s been incorporating ginger into her lessons, turning the classroom into a mini-lab. “I wanted to make learning about health benefits interactive and engaging,” she says. “What better way than to involve our senses?”

Ginger Tea: A Taste of Science

One sunny afternoon, students were brewing ginger tea, measuring temperatures, and recording observations. They learned about extraction methods, solubility, and the science behind ginger’s health claims. “It’s not just about memorizing facts,” Ms. Camilleri explains. “It’s about understanding processes and making connections.”

After the experiment, students shared their thoughts. “I never knew ginger had so many benefits,” says 15-year-old Matthew. “I’ll definitely be adding more to my tea now.”

Ginger Beyond the Classroom

But the learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Students are encouraged to explore ginger’s uses at home. Some have started adding it to their smoothies, others are experimenting with ginger-infused recipes. “It’s great to see them taking initiative and applying what they’ve learned,” Ms. Camilleri says.

Local health food stores like Apotheka in Valletta are also getting involved. They’re offering workshops on ginger-based remedies, inviting students to learn more and taste test some creations.

Ginger’s Future in Malta

With the health and wellness industry booming, could ginger become Malta’s next big export? Local farmers are already showing interest in cultivating it on a larger scale. “It’s a crop that could thrive in Malta’s climate,” says Mr. Joseph Saliba from the Malta Chamber of Agriculture.

As for Ms. Camilleri’s students, they’re not just learning about ginger, they’re becoming its ambassadors. “I hope they’ll spread the word, inspire others to incorporate ginger into their diets,” she says. “After all, it’s not just a spice. It’s a superfood.”
