Malta Art: Henry Falzon explores winter shores in new exhibition

Henry Falzon’s Winter Solace: A Chilly Canvas of Malta’s Shores

Henry Falzon’s Winter Solace: A Shoreline Symphony in Paint

Ever wondered what our Maltese shorelines look like when they’re blanketed in a chill? Local artist Henry Falzon has, and he’s painted his way into our winter wonderland in his latest exhibition, ‘Winter Solace’.

From Summer’s Sizzle to Winter’s Chill

Malta’s sun-kissed shores are a staple in our collective consciousness, but Falzon wanted to capture the quieter, cooler side of our islands. “I’ve always been fascinated by how our beaches transform in winter,” he says. “The vibrant summer crowds are gone, replaced by a serene, almost melancholic beauty.”

Falzon’s winterscapes are not just a departure from our usual sunny selfies; they’re a departure from his usual vibrant palette too. “I’ve had to dig out my blues and greys,” he laughs. “But it’s been a refreshing challenge.”

From St. Peter’s Pool to Golden Bay

From the turquoise waters of St. Peter’s Pool to the golden sands of, well, Golden Bay, Falzon has painted our winter shores with a delicate, almost reverent touch. His brushstrokes capture the crisp air, the whispering waves, the stark beauty of a beach without its summer finery.

But don’t expect these paintings to be gloomy. Falzon’s winter is not a time of darkness, but of hushed light. “The sun might not be as strong, but it’s still there, casting these long, dramatic shadows,” he explains. “It’s a different kind of beauty, but no less powerful.”

Catching Winter’s Fleeting Moments

Capturing these fleeting winter moments hasn’t been easy. Falzon has braved chilly mornings and windy afternoons, painting en plein air to capture the ever-changing light. “One day, the sea is calm and glassy, the next, it’s churning and wild,” he says. “You have to be ready to catch it when it’s at its most beautiful.”

But Falzon’s not just capturing moments; he’s capturing memories too. “I hope these paintings remind people of their own winter walks along the shore,” he says. “The crunch of sand underfoot, the tang of salt in the air, the quiet joy of being alone on a usually crowded beach.”

And if these paintings inspire a few winter walks of their own, Falzon will consider his exhibition a success.
