Malta Biennale: Resilience in Space

In the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, a peculiar sight unfolds. A once-abandoned 17th-century palace, now the Malta School of Arts, is transformed. Windows, once dull and lifeless, now glow with an otherworldly light. This is no ordinary glow, but a beacon of the 5th edition of the Malta Biennale, titled ‘Resilience’.

A Cosmic Invitation

The Malta Biennale, held every two years, is no stranger to pushing boundaries. But this year, it’s reaching for the stars, quite literally. ‘Resilience’ is curated by an international team led by Malta’s own Raphael Vella, and it’s inviting us to look up and look within. The theme? Resilience, a quality Malta knows all too well, and space, the final frontier.

‘Resilience’ isn’t just about survival, it’s about thriving. It’s about how we, as individuals and as a society, bounce back from adversity. And what better way to explore this than through the vast, endless expanse of space? After all, if anything can teach us about resilience, it’s the cosmos.

Art in Orbit

This year’s Biennale isn’t just about art on walls. It’s about art in motion, art that interacts, art that challenges. Take ‘Orbital Resonance’ by Maltese artistustin Farrugia, for instance. His installation at the Malta School of Arts uses light and sound to mimic the rhythm of the cosmos. Stand in the middle of the room, and you’re at the centre of the universe, quite literally.

Then there’s ‘The Weight of Light’ by Italian artist Chiara Fumai. It’s a performance piece that explores the resilience of women in the face of adversity. It’s a powerful reminder of our strength, our resilience, our ability to shine even in the darkest of times.

Belonging in the Cosmos

The Biennale isn’t just about art. It’s about conversation, about community, about belonging. It’s about asking big questions: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? And how do we get there together?

That’s why you’ll find events like ‘The Resilience Café’ at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity. It’s a space, quite literally, for conversation. For sharing stories of resilience. For building community. For belonging.

Because that’s what the Biennale is about. It’s about Malta, yes. But it’s also about the cosmos. It’s about us, but it’s also about the universe. It’s about our past, but it’s also about our future. It’s about resilience, but it’s also about hope. It’s about belonging, but it’s also about reaching out, reaching up, reaching for the stars.

So, look up. The cosmos is calling. And Malta, with its resilience and its art, is answering.
