Malta’s Skyward Sleepover: The First Airport Hotel Takes Flight in 2023

Imagine touching down at Malta International Airport, not to rush through the arrivals hall, but to check into a hotel right there in the terminal. That’s not a scene from a futuristic movie, but a reality set to take off in 2023. Malta’s first airport hotel is on its way, and it’s set to change the game for both locals and tourists.

From Runway to Check-in Desk

The upcoming hotel, a joint venture between Malta International Airport and Hilton, will be nestled within the airport’s departures lounge. Named the Hilton Malta Airport, it will offer 142 rooms, a restaurant, a bar, and a fitness center. But the real selling point? The convenience. Passengers will be able to check-in, drop off their bags, and head straight to their gate.

“It’s a dream come true for the frequent flyer,” says Joseph Muscat, a local businessman who’s often seen at the airport. “I can’t wait to skip the taxi ride to my hotel and grab a bite right here before my flight.”

A Local Boost for Tourism

The hotel isn’t just about convenience; it’s also about boosting Malta’s tourism industry. According to Malta Tourism Authority, the new hotel could attract an additional 30,000 tourists annually. “This is a significant development,” says Karol Aquilina, MTA’s director. “It will extend the tourism season and attract a new type of tourist – the stopover traveler.”

Locals are also expected to benefit. The hotel is set to create around 50 new jobs, with positions ranging from housekeeping to management. “It’s a great opportunity for Maltese job seekers,” says Michael Falzon, CEO of Jobsplus. “And it’s another step towards diversifying our economy.”

Designing for the Future

The Hilton Malta Airport is being designed with sustainability in mind. It will aim for a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, making it one of Malta’s greenest hotels. “We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact,” says Alan Borg, CEO of Malta International Airport. “This hotel is a step towards that goal.”

But sustainability isn’t just about the environment. It’s also about the future. The hotel is designed to be flexible, ready to adapt to changes in travel trends. “We’re building for the future,” says Simon Naudi, Hilton’s vice president for development in the Mediterranean. “And we’re excited about what that future holds.”

So, there you have it, folks. Malta’s first airport hotel is on its way. It’s not just a new place to stay; it’s a new way to travel. And it’s set to take off in 2023. Who’s ready to check-in?
