Malta’s Green Revolution: Eco-City & EV Charging Boost

Malta’s Green Revolution: New Eco-City and EV Charging Boost

Imagine this: Malta’s first eco-city, rising from the ashes of an old industrial site in Birkirkara. That’s not a distant dream anymore. Today, April 21, 2026, marked a significant turning point as the government unveiled plans for a sustainable urban haven, right in the heart of the island.

Malta’s First Eco-City: A Green Oasis in Birkirkara

In a press conference held at the historic Auberge de Castille, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced the ambitious project. The eco-city, named ‘Verde’, will transform the derelict former industrial site along the Birkirkara bypass into a green, sustainable hub. The plan includes energy-efficient buildings, green spaces, and smart city technologies.

“Verde will be a testament to Malta’s commitment to sustainability,” Abela said. “We’re not just building a city; we’re creating a new way of life.”

Electric Vehicle Revolution: Charging Infrastructure Expansion

But that’s not all. In a move that will electrify Malta’s roads, the government also announced an expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. By 2030, every street in Malta will have access to EV charging points, with a focus on public spaces and residential areas.

Energy Minister Michael Farrugia revealed that the government will invest €50 million in this project, aiming to make Malta a leader in EV adoption in the Mediterranean. “We’re not just future-proofing our transport system; we’re future-proofing our planet,” Farrugia said.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of last year’s successful pilot project in St. Julian’s, which saw a significant increase in EV usage. Local businesses have already expressed their support for the expansion, with many planning to switch their fleets to electric vehicles.

Community Engagement: Your Say in Malta’s Green Future

But the government isn’t stopping at policy and investment. They’re also opening the floor to public engagement. A series of community consultations will be held across Malta and Gozo, giving residents the chance to shape their green future.

“This is your city, your island,” Abela said. “We want your ideas, your feedback, your energy. Together, we can make Malta a greener, cleaner place to live, work, and visit.”

The first consultation will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta on May 5, 2026. More details will be announced soon.

So, Malta, are you ready to embrace the green revolution? Your future is waiting, and it’s greener than ever.
