Picture this: A young boy, barely in his teens, standing at the edge of the Grand Harbour in Ħamrun, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and fear. He’s about to board a ship that will take him far away from the familiar streets of Malta, to a land called California. Little did he know, that boy would one day become a millionaire, his story echoing from the shores of the Mediterranean to the beaches of Hollywood.

Meet Joseph Muscat, not to be confused with our former Prime Minister. This Joseph Muscat is a different breed of Maltese success story. Born and raised in Ħamrun, he left Malta in the 1980s, seeking a better life across the Atlantic. Today, he’s a multimillionaire, a respected businessman, and a philanthropist, proving that no matter where you come from, success is within reach.

Growing up in Ħamrun, Joseph was no stranger to hard work. His father was a docker, his mother a seamstress. They instilled in him a strong work ethic and a dream to make something of himself. When an opportunity arose to migrate to the United States, Joseph, then just 17, seized it.

“Leaving Malta was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Joseph recalls. “But I knew I had to take this chance. I wanted more than what Malta could offer at the time.”

Joseph arrived in California with little more than hope and determination. He started as a dishwasher, working long hours for meagre pay. But he was undeterred. He enrolled in night classes, studied hard, and eventually earned a degree in Business Administration.

His big break came when he started a small tech company with a friend. They saw the potential in the fledgling internet industry and rode the wave to success. Today, Joseph’s company, Tech Innovations Inc., is worth hundreds of millions.

Despite his success, Joseph never forgot his roots. He’s a regular donor to Maltese charities and has set up scholarships for Maltese students to study in the US. He also visits Malta annually, spending time with family and friends, and investing in local businesses.

“Malta will always be home,” Joseph says. “No matter how far I go, no matter how much I achieve, Ħamrun will always be my starting point. It’s where I learned the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the power of dreams.”

Joseph’s story is a beacon of hope for young Maltese dreaming of success beyond our islands. It’s a testament to what hard work, determination, and a little bit of courage can achieve.

“If I can do it, anyone can,” Joseph believes. “Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough, not smart enough, not talented enough. If you believe in yourself, if you’re willing to work hard, you can make it anywhere.”
