Malta’s Ian Borg Reiterates Support for Lebanon at EU Council

Ian Borg: Malta Stands Firm with Lebanon at EU Council

Malta’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Ian Borg, was in Brussels this week, his voice echoing through the halls of the EU Council as he reiterated our island nation’s steadfast support for Lebanon. But why does this tiny Mediterranean country matter so much to Malta, and what does our support mean in practical terms?

Malta and Lebanon: A Shared History

Tucked away in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta and Lebanon share more than just a body of water. Our histories are intertwined, our cultures interwoven. From the Phoenician traders who first set foot on Malta’s shores to the Lebanese immigrants who call our island home today, the bonds between our two nations run deep.

It’s no surprise then, that when Lebanon faces challenges, Malta stands by its side. And the challenges Lebanon faces today are immense. The country is grappling with an economic crisis, political instability, and the aftermath of the devastating explosion in Beirut last year. It’s a situation that Minister Borg described as “untenable”, and one that Malta is committed to helping alleviate.

Malta’s Commitment: More Than Words

Malta’s support for Lebanon isn’t just lip service. It’s tangible, practical, and complex. From the €1 million in humanitarian aid we’ve provided to the Lebanese Red Cross to the €500,000 we’ve contributed to the UNICEF Lebanon Flash Appeal, Malta is putting its money where its mouth is.

But our support isn’t just financial. It’s also about diplomacy and dialogue. Minister Borg has been a vocal advocate for Lebanon within the EU, pushing for a coordinated European response to the crisis. He’s also been instrumental in facilitating high-level meetings between Lebanese officials and their European counterparts, helping to keep the lines of communication open even in the most trying of times.

: A Path Forward for Lebanon

So, what does the future hold for Lebanon? It’s a question that’s on everyone’s minds, from Brussels to Beirut. But as Minister Borg reminded the EU Council, it’s not a question we should be asking in vain. Because while the challenges Lebanon faces are daunting, they’re not insurmountable. With the right support, the right policies, and the right will, Lebanon can forge a path forward.

And Malta will be by its side, every step of the way. Because that’s what neighbours do. That’s what friends do. And that’s what Malta has always done for Lebanon.

“Malta will continue to stand by Lebanon,” Minister Borg said, his voice echoing through the halls of the EU Council. “We will continue to support its people, its institutions, and its future. Because that’s what we do. That’s who we are.”
