St Julian’s Accident: Woman Seriously Injured

Truck vs. Pedestrian: St Julian’s Shock as Local Woman Seriously Injured

As the sun set over Spinola Bay, the usually bustling streets of St Julian’s witnessed an unsettling scene. A woman, a familiar face to many locals, lay injured on the pavement, the victim of a collision with a heavy goods truck. The incident, which occurred on Triq San Ġorġ, has left the close-knit community shaken and demanding answers.

What Happened?

The accident took place around 7:30 PM on Tuesday evening. Eyewitnesses report that the woman, identified as 52-year-old Maria Grech, was crossing the street near the popular café, The George, when she was struck by a truck driven by a 45-year-old man. Grech was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital with serious injuries, where she remains in stable condition.

The driver of the truck, a resident of Msida, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and released pending further investigation. The truck, registered to a local logistics company, has been impounded for forensic examination.

Community Reacts: “Not Another Maria!”

News of the incident spread quickly through St Julian’s, with many expressing shock and concern. “I’ve known Maria for years,” said one local shopkeeper, who wished to remain anonymous. “She’s always so careful when crossing the street. It’s just not fair.”

A petition has since been circulating, calling for improved pedestrian safety in the area. “We’ve been saying for years that this street is too narrow for the amount of traffic it gets,” said another resident, Lisa Camilleri. “It’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again if nothing changes.”

Authorities Respond: “Safety Our Top Priority”

In response to the incident, the Malta Police Force has issued a statement, assuring the public that they are treating the case with the utmost seriousness. “We understand the concern this incident has caused in the community,” the statement read. “We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward with any information they may have.”

The Ministry for Infrastructure, Sustainable Development, and Planning has also weighed in, promising to review the safety measures in place along Triq San ĠorĿ. “The safety of our citizens is our top priority,” said a spokesperson. “We will be conducting a thorough review of the area to ensure that all necessary precautions are being taken.”

: A Call for Change

As the investigation into the incident continues, one thing is clear: the community of St Julian’s is not willing to accept this as an isolated incident. They are calling for change, for improved safety measures, and for justice for Maria Grech.

“This could have happened to any of us,” said Lisa Camilleri, her voice resolute. “We can’t just go on like this. We need to make sure that our streets are safe, for everyone.”
