Ex-Inspector Sentenced for Mafia-Style Threats
Former Economic Crimes Inspector Sentenced for Mafia-Style Threats
In a twist of irony, a former inspector from the Economic Crimes Unit found himself on the other side of the law today. Joseph Camilleri, who once hunted down financial criminals, was sentenced to six months in prison for making Mafia-style threats. The sentencing took place at the Criminal Court in St. George’s Square, Valletta.
From Inspector to Accused
Camilleri’s fall from grace began in 2019 when he was accused of sending threatening messages to a local businessman. The messages, sent via WhatsApp, were laced with violent language and references to Mafia-style retribution. The businessman, who runs a successful construction company in Birkirkara, reported the threats to the police.
“I will make your life a living hell,” one message read. “You will regret the day you were born,” another warned. The threats were so severe that the businessman feared for his life and that of his family.
Camilleri’s Defense and Sentencing
During the trial, Camilleri’s defense argued that the messages were sent in the heat of the moment and that he had no intention of carrying out the threats. However, the court was not convinced. Mr. Justice Antonio Mizzi noted that the threats were “grave and serious” and that they had caused the businessman significant distress.
“The fact that the accused was once an inspector in the Economic Crimes Unit does not mitigate his actions,” the judge said. “In fact, it makes them more serious. He should have known better.”
The court sentenced Camilleri to six months in prison, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to pay the businessman €5,000 in compensation.
Lessons Learned
This case serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law. Camilleri, who once enforced it, now finds himself subject to its penalties. It also underscores the seriousness of making threats, even in the heat of the moment. As the judge noted, words can have consequences, and those consequences can be severe.
For the businessman involved, the case has been a traumatic experience. “I never thought I would be on the receiving end of threats like this,” he said. “But I’m glad justice has been served.”
As for Camilleri, his future in law enforcement hangs in the balance. The Police Corps has launched an internal investigation, and whether he will retain his position.
