Woman Hit by Truck in St. Julian’s: Local Residents Demand Safer Streets

Truck vs. Pedestrian: St Julian’s Resident Hospitalized After Serious Accident

As the sun dipped below the horizon on Tuesday evening, a grim scene unfolded along St. George’s Road in St. Julian’s. A woman, later identified as 45-year-old local resident, Maria Grech, was struck by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) as she crossed the busy street. The incident, which occurred around 7:30 PM, through the usually bustling town, known for its vibrant nightlife and tourist hotspots.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, a large white Mercedes-Benz Actros, was making a left turn from St. George’s Road onto Triq San Giljan when it collided with Grech, who was crossing the street towards the popular Bay Street Complex. The force of the impact sent her crashing onto the pavement, leaving her with serious injuries.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Within minutes, emergency services arrived at the scene. Paramedics from the Maltese Civil Protection Department rushed Grech to Mater Dei Hospital, where she was admitted in critical but stable condition. The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old man from Msida, was administered a breathalyzer test and given a roadside drugs test, both of which he passed. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and taken to St. Julian’s Police Station for further questioning.

The incident caused significant traffic congestion in the area, with St. George’s Road and nearby Triq San Giljan temporarily closed to traffic while police investigated the scene. Diversions were put in place, leading to long delays for motorists and public transport users.

St. Julian’s Residents React

News of the incident spread quickly among St. Julian’s residents, many of whom took to social media to express their shock and concern. “I’ve crossed that road hundreds of times,” said one local resident, Simon Azzopardi, who lives near the scene of the accident. “It’s always busy, and it’s hard to judge the speed of the traffic. I hope Maria makes a full recovery, and that this serves as a wake-up call for everyone to be more careful on our roads.”

Another resident, Catherine Camilleri, who works at a nearby café, echoed Azzopardi’s sentiments. “We see so many near misses here. It’s only a matter of time before something like this happens again if we don’t do something about it. We need better pedestrian crossings, more enforcement, and drivers to slow down.”

Campaign for Safer Streets

Tuesday’s accident has reignited calls for improved pedestrian safety in St. Julian’s. Local councillor, Michael Briguglio, has been a vocal advocate for better infrastructure and traffic calming measures in the area. “We’ve been pushing for more zebra crossings, pedestrian lights, and even a pedestrian street in the heart of St. Julian’s,” he said. “We need to make our streets safer for everyone, especially those who choose to walk or cycle.”

Briguglio has also called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, including lower speed limits and tougher penalties for dangerous driving. “We need to send a clear message that reckless driving will not be tolerated,” he said. “Our streets are for everyone to use, and we all have a responsibility to ensure they are safe.”

As the investigation into Tuesday’s accident continues, one thing is clear: the incident has struck a chord with St. Julian’s residents, many of whom are now calling for urgent action to improve pedestrian safety in their town.
