Malta’s 10-Week Window: Exploring North Africa’s Energy Potential

North Africa’s Energy Reach Extended: Malta’s 10-Week Window

Imagine standing at the breakwater of Marsamxett Harbour, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange and red. Now, picture this: the energy from the sun setting in North Africa could soon be powering your home in Malta. That’s the promise of a recent extension, opening a 10-week window for interested parties to procure energy from our neighbours across the Mediterranean.

What’s the Deal?

The Malta Energy and Water Services Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has extended the deadline for expressions of interest in the Malta-North Africa Interconnector (MNAI) project. Originally set to close in late April, the new deadline is now July 15, 2023. This 10-week extension is a lifeline for those eager to explore the potential of North Africa’s vast renewable energy resources.

The MNAI, a brainchild of the European Union’s Clean Energy for EU Islands initiative, aims to connect Malta’s electricity grid with that of North Africa. This ambitious project seeks to harness the region’s abundant solar and wind energy, providing a clean, sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Why Should Malta Care?

Malta’s energy scene is at a crossroads. We’re heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels, with a significant chunk of our energy coming from Italy. The MNAI offers a way out of this dependency, opening doors to affordable, clean, and secure energy. It’s a win-win: we reduce our carbon footprint and secure our energy supply.

the project aligns with Malta’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and the EU’s Green Deal. By 2030, we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels. The MNAI could be a breakthrough in achieving this goal.

What’s Next?

The extended deadline presents an opportunity for local businesses, energy providers, and even individual households to explore the possibilities. EWURA encourages all interested parties to submit their expressions of interest, marking the first step towards a greener future.

Dr. Gordon Cordina, EWURA’s Executive Chairman, emphasizes the importance of this extension. “The additional time allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of the project’s potential. We encourage all interested parties to make the most of this opportunity.”

So, as the sun sets over Marsamxett Harbour, let’s look northwards with hope. The next 10 weeks could shape Malta’s energy future. Let’s make the most of this extended window.
