Malta Unveils Solar Farm & EV Charging Stations: A Green Leap Forward
Malta’s Green Revolution: New Solar Farm & EV Charging Stations Unveiled
Imagine standing at the foot of Delimara Power Station, watching the sun set over the Mediterranean, and knowing that soon, this very spot will be a symbol of Malta’s green energy future. Today, April 25, 2026, marked a significant turning point as the government announced plans for a massive solar farm and a network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the islands.
Malta’s Largest Solar Farm: A Sun-Powered Future
The highlight of today’s announcements was the unveiling of plans for Malta’s largest solar farm, to be built on the site of the soon-to-be decommissioned Delimara Power Station. With a capacity of 100 MW, this solar farm will more than double Malta’s current solar energy production, pushing us closer to our 2030 renewable energy targets.
Minister for Energy, Malta, Joe Mizzi, stated, “This is not just about building a solar farm; it’s about creating a sustainable future for our children. We’re transforming a symbol of our industrial past into a beacon of our green future.”
Charging Ahead: Malta’s EV Revolution
But the government didn’t stop at solar. In a bid to encourage electric vehicle adoption, they also announced plans to install 500 new EV charging stations across Malta and Gozo by 2028. This includes fast-charging stations along major roads and at popular tourist spots like the Three Cities and the Mgarr Ferry Terminal in Gozo.
“We want to make it as easy to own and drive an electric vehicle as it is a conventional car,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Ian Borg. “These charging stations are a crucial step in achieving that.”
Local businesses are also getting on board. The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) has pledged to work with the government to install charging points at hotels and restaurants across the islands.
What Does This Mean for Malta?
Today’s announcements signal a significant shift in Malta’s energy policy. We’re moving away from fossil fuels and towards a greener, more sustainable future. The solar farm at Delimara will not only reduce our reliance on imported energy but also create new jobs in the renewable energy sector. The EV charging stations, on the other hand, will make it easier for residents and tourists alike to adopt electric vehicles, further reducing our carbon footprint.
But this is just the beginning. As Minister Mizzi noted, “Today is about setting the course, not reaching the destination. We have a long way to go, but with these announcements, we’re well on our way to a greener, more sustainable Malta.”
So, the next time you’re driving past Delimara, imagine it covered in solar panels, soaking up the sun and powering our future. It might seem like a distant dream now, but thanks to today’s announcements, it’s one step closer to reality.
