Victoria’s Caritas Centre: More Than a Meal

In Victoria’s Heart: Caritas’ House of Help

In the quiet, sun-drenched streets of Victoria, Gozo, a unassuming house stands out. It’s not the grand palazzos or the historic churches that draw the eye, but the steady stream of people entering and exiting. This is Caritas’ Victoria Centre, a beacon of support for the island’s most vulnerable.

More Than a Meal

Every weekday, the centre’s kitchen hums with activity. Volunteers chop vegetables, cook pasta, and prepare salads. By 12:30 PM, a line forms outside, stretching along Triq San Gorg, waiting for a hot meal. But this is more than just a soup kitchen. It’s a community hub, a place where people find not just food, but friendship and hope.

“We serve around 80 meals a day,” says centre coordinator, Maria Grech. “But we’re here to help in other ways too. We offer legal aid, advice, and even emotional support.”

Legal Aid in the Heart of Gozo

Tucked away in a corner of the centre is the legal aid office. Here, lawyers volunteer their time to help those in need. From housing issues to employment disputes, they provide free, confidential advice.

“We see people from all walks of life,” says volunteer lawyer, Dr. Joseph Borg. “Some are facing eviction, others are struggling with work contracts. We do our best to guide them through the complexities of the legal system.”

Emotional Support and Integration

But the centre’s role extends beyond practical help. It’s a place where people can find understanding, companionship, and a sense of belonging.

“We have people who come here every day,” says Grech. “They might be lonely, or they might just need someone to talk to. We’re here to listen, to support, and to help them integrate back into society.”

One regular visitor, Joseph (not his real name), tells us, “This place has been a lifeline for me. I’ve faced some tough times, but the people here, they’ve been like family.”

As the centre looks to the future, it plans to expand its services. It wants to offer more courses, more advice sessions, and more opportunities for people to connect.

“We want to be a place where people can grow, learn, and thrive,” says Grech. “We want to help them not just survive, but to truly live.”

And so, in the heart of Victoria, Caritas’ house of help stands ready, a testament to the power of community, compassion, and hope.
