Galdes: “I Was Ambushed, Not Blocked” After Running Disqualification

Malta’s political scene was left buzzing on Tuesday as former PN MP and mayoral candidate, Alexei Galdes, claimed he was the victim of a ‘coordinated attack’ after being disqualified from running in the upcoming local council elections. The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions, with many questioning the process and its implications.

Galdes, who was running for mayor of Birkirkara, found himself in hot water after the Returning Officer disqualified him due to an alleged failure to submit his nomination papers within the stipulated timeframe. However, Galdes maintains that he was the victim of a deliberate attempt to sabotage his candidacy.

Galdes’ Version of Events

In a fiery press conference held outside the Birkirkara Local Council offices, Galdes recounted his experience, “I arrived at the council offices at 11:55 am, five minutes before the deadline. I was told that the system was down, and I was asked to wait. At 12:10 pm, I was informed that the system was still down, and I was advised to leave my papers with the receptionist.”

Galdes alleges that he was given the runaround, with the system miraculously coming back online just as the deadline passed. “It’s clear that there was a coordinated effort to block me from running. I was ambushed, not blocked,” he asserted.

PN Reacts, Labour Denies

The Nationalist Party has since issued a statement expressing its support for Galdes, stating that they believe he was unfairly treated. Party Secretary General, Clyde Caruana, said, “We are deeply concerned about the process that led to Alexei’s disqualification. We believe that he was unfairly targeted.”

However, the Labour Party has denied any wrongdoing, with a spokesperson stating, “We categorically deny any involvement in this matter. The process was followed correctly, and any allegations to the contrary are baseless.”

The incident has raised questions about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process, with many calling for a thorough investigation. As the elections draw near, all eyes will be on the electoral commission to ensure a smooth and fair process.

Alexei Galdes has vowed to continue fighting, stating, “I will not be silenced. I will continue to fight for the people of Birkirkara, and I will not let this setback deter me.”
