Malta’s Parties Unveil Election Slogans

In the heart of Valletta, near the iconic St. George’s Square, a flurry of activity has begun. Election posters, once a rare sight, are now springing up like daffodils in spring, each bearing a party’s logo and a catchy slogan. The 2023 Maltese general election is just around the corner, and the political parties are rolling out their battle cries.

Labour’s ‘Int Malta, Nifs Ġdid’

The ruling Labour Party has unveiled its election slogan, ‘Int Malta, Nifs Ġdid’ (In Malta, New Ideas). The slogan, a play on the party’s name and a nod to its promise of fresh ideas, is splashed across billboards and social media platforms. Party leader and Prime Minister Robert Abela has been quick to point out the party’s achievements over the past five years, from economic growth to social reforms, and promises more of the same.

Labour’s campaign has been characteristically vibrant, with rallies and events planned across the islands. The party’s stronghold in the Three Cities, particularly in Birkirkara, has seen an influx of campaign activity, with residents reporting a constant stream of party officials and volunteers.

PN’s ‘Il-Partit Nazzjonalista – Ħbieb u Żmien’

The Nationalist Party (PN), led by Bernard Grech, has adopted the slogan ‘Il-Partit Nazzjonalista – Ħbieb u Żmien’ (The Nationalist Party – Love and Change). The slogan, a departure from the party’s traditional focus on ‘change’, emphasizes unity and love for Malta. Grech has been vocal about his vision for a more united Malta, promising to bridge the political divide and heal the country’s social fabric.

The PN’s campaign has been centered around its ‘Manifesta’ document, a comprehensive policy outline that covers everything from education to healthcare. The party has been actively engaging with voters, holding town hall meetings and door-to-door campaigns, particularly in its strongholds in the northern regions of Malta.

Other Parties and Independents

Smaller parties and independent candidates have also been busy promoting their messages. The Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) party, Malta’s main green party, has adopted the slogan ‘AD – Ħbieb il-Bniedem’ (AD – Love for the Environment). The party has been focusing on environmental issues, promising a greener, more sustainable Malta.

Independent candidates, too, have been making their voices heard. In the second district, which includes the towns of Żebbuġ and Żurrieq, independent candidate and local businessman Joe Gasan has been campaigning under the slogan ‘Gasan – B’Għid u B’Ħsieb’ (Gasan – With You and For You). Gasan has been promising a more personal, community-focused approach to politics.

As the election draws near, the streets of Malta are filled with a sense of anticipation. The slogans, the rallies, the debates – they’re all part of the democratic process that makes Malta what it is. So, as you walk down Republic Street or Triq San Gwann, take a moment to consider the messages these slogans carry. They’re more than just words; they’re promises for our future.

And remember, as the late, great Maltese politician Eddie Fenech Adami once said, “Democracy is not just about voting; it’s about making your voice heard.” So, go out there, make your voice heard, and let’s shape our future together.
