Borg Pledges New Hospitals & Free Cancer Medication

Alex Borg’s Health Pledge: New Hospitals and Free Cancer Medication

Imagine this: a mother in Birkirkara, Malta, no longer having to worry about the cost of life-saving cancer medication for her child. This is the vision that Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg is painting with his recent pledges to build new hospitals and make all cancer medication free if elected in the next general election.

Borg’s Health Manifesto

Borg, a seasoned politician and doctor by profession, has been vocal about his plans to revolutionize Malta’s healthcare system. His manifesto, launched recently at the party’s headquarters in Pietà, outlined a comprehensive strategy that includes the construction of two new hospitals in Gozo and the South of Malta, along with the expansion and upgrading of existing facilities.

“We need to think big and plan ahead,” Borg said, “Our current healthcare infrastructure is struggling to keep up with our growing population and the increasing complexity of health conditions.”

Free Cancer Medication: A breakthrough?

But it’s Borg’s pledge to make all cancer medication free that has grabbed the most attention. According to the Malta Cancer Foundation, cancer is the second most common cause of death in Malta, accounting for around 16% of all deaths. The cost of medication can be astronomical, often running into thousands of euros per month.

“No family should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying for life-saving medication,” Borg said. His proposal, if implemented, would significantly ease the financial burden on cancer patients and their families.

Challenges and Critics

While Borg’s proposals have been met with enthusiasm by many, they have also drawn criticism. Some have questioned where the funds for such ambitious projects will come from, while others have argued that the focus should be on preventing illness rather than treating it.

Dr. Borg, however, remains undeterred. “Prevention is indeed key,” he said, “But we must also ensure that our healthcare system is strong enough to handle the health challenges we face today and those we will face tomorrow.”

if Borg’s health manifesto will become a reality. But one thing is certain: his pledges have sparked a much-needed conversation about the future of healthcare in Malta.

As Borg himself put it, “We are not just building hospitals, we are building a healthier, more compassionate Malta.”
