Malta’s Plague Doctor: A Graphic Novel Unveils Our Darkest Hour
Uncovering Malta’s Past: The Plague Doctor’s Tale
Imagine, if you will, the narrow, cobbled streets of Mdina in the 16th century. The air is thick with fear and the stench of death. This is not a scene from a Game of Thrones episode, but a chilling reality that once gripped our fair islands. Today, we look the gripping tale of the Great Plague of 1592-1593, which has inspired a graphic novel set to captivate local audiences.
Malta’s Darkest Hour
The 1590s were a trying time for Malta. The Order of St. John, our then rulers, faced a formidable foe – not on the battlefield, but in the form of a microscopic killer. The Great Plague, believed to be the bubonic plague, swept through our islands, leaving devastation in its wake. Historical records estimate that around 10,000 people perished, nearly half of Malta’s population at the time.
Amidst this chaos, a figure emerged, cloaked and masked, to tend to the sick and dying. The ‘Plague Doctor’, as he became known, was a symbol of hope in the darkest of times. His story, however, was largely forgotten, until now.
From History to Comics: The Birth of ‘Plague Doctor’
Local graphic artist and historian, Mario Ellul, was inspired to bring the Plague Doctor’s tale to life after stumbling upon historical accounts during his research. “I was struck by the bravery and selflessness of this figure,” Ellul explains. “He was a real-life hero, and his story deserved to be told.”
Ellul spent years painstakingly researching and illustrating ‘Plague Doctor’, ensuring historical accuracy while creating an engaging narrative. The graphic novel is set to launch later this year, with a special event planned at the Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta.
“I want readers to connect with the past on a personal level,” Ellul says. “To understand that history isn’t just dates and names, but real people, with real stories, right here in Malta.”
Preserving History, Inspiring the Future
The launch of ‘Plague Doctor’ coincides with the 420th anniversary of the Great Plague. It’s a poignant reminder of our past, and a testament to the power of storytelling. As Ellul puts it, “History is our collective memory. It’s our duty to preserve it, and to inspire future generations with it.”
So, mark your calendars, dear readers. This October, step back in time with ‘Plague Doctor’. It’s not just a graphic novel; it’s a journey through Malta’s darkest hour, and a celebration of the heroes who emerged from it.
