Man Charged After Msida Carwash Brawl
Carwash Clash: Man Charged After Brawl in Msida
In the heart of Msida, where the hum of cars and the scent of suds usually fill the air, a sudden burst of shouting and the crunch of metal against metal signalled an unexpected turn of events at ‘Clean & Shine’ carwash on Tuesday afternoon. A heated argument between two men escalated into a full-blown brawl, leaving one man with a bloody nose and the other facing assault charges.
The incident, which was caught on CCTV and has since gone viral on local social media platforms, began as a minor disagreement over a parking spot. According to eyewitnesses, the two men, both in their late 30s, exchanged words before the situation quickly spiralled out of control.
From Words to Fists: The Escalation
Footage from the carwash’s CCTV system shows the two men, later identified as Malta residents Joseph Xuereb and Michael Azzopardi, standing by their respective vehicles, gesturing animatedly. Within minutes, the gestures turn into shoves, and the shoves into full-blown punches. Xuereb, a burly man with a reputation for being hot-headed, lands a solid punch on Azzopardi’s nose, sending him reeling back against his car.
The fight, which lasted a mere 90 seconds but felt like an eternity to the shocked onlookers, ended as abruptly as it began. Azzopardi, blood streaming down his face, climbed into his car and drove off, while Xuereb, breathing heavily, leaned against his vehicle, seemingly unfazed.
Arrest and Aftermath
Police, alerted by the carwash’s manager, arrived shortly after the fight and took Xuereb into custody. He was later charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and released on bail. Azzopardi, meanwhile, was treated at Mater Dei Hospital for a broken nose and discharged the same evening.
The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many condemning the violence while others joke about the ‘carwash challenge’. However, the police have warned that such behaviour will not be tolerated, and anyone caught engaging in public brawls can expect to face the full force of the law.
For Xuereb, the road ahead is uncertain. Facing potential jail time and a hefty fine, he may also find himself struggling to maintain his reputation in the tight-knit community of Msida. As for Azzopardi, he has vowed to press charges, stating, “I won’t let this go. I have a family to think about, and I can’t have people thinking they can just attack me like that.”
