Sannat’s Wine Festival: A Toast to Tradition

Sip, Swirl, Savor: Sannat’s Sixth Annual Wine Festival Uncorks This Weekend

Imagine this: the sun begins to set over the picturesque village of Sannat, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. The air is filled with the aroma of locally-grown grapes, their sweetness ready to be transformed into the nectar that will flow freely in just a few hours. This is not a dream, but a reality that unfolds every year in Sannat during its annual Wine Festival.

Sannat: A Village with a Vineyard Heart

Nestled in the heart of Gozo, Sannat is a village known for its stunning views, rich history, and warm community spirit. But it’s the village’s deep-rooted connection to viticulture that makes it stand out. With vineyards dotting the scene, Sannat has been cultivating grapes and producing wine for centuries. It’s this passion for winemaking that inspired the village to launch its annual Wine Festival six years ago.

“Sannat has always been about wine,” says Mario Vella, a local winemaker and one of the festival’s organizers. “Our ancestors understood the importance of wine in our culture and our economy. The Wine Festival is our way of celebrating this heritage and sharing it with the rest of Malta and Gozo.”

Six Years of Sipping Success

The first Sannat Wine Festival was held in 2016, a small gathering that has since grown into a major event on Malta’s wine calendar. This year’s edition, the sixth, promises to be the best yet, with over 20 local wineries participating, each offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation.

“We’ve seen the festival grow year after year,” says Vella. “It’s not just about the wine anymore. It’s about the experience – the food, the music, the atmosphere. It’s about bringing people together to celebrate our shared love for wine.”

What to Expect at the 2022 Sannat Wine Festival

This year’s festival, held on the 27th and 28th of August, promises a delightful mix of old and new. Here’s what you can expect:

    • Wine Tasting: Over 20 local wineries will be showcasing their best drops. From traditional Gozitan reds to innovative whites and rosés, there’s something for every palate.
    • Food: No wine festival is complete without great food. Expect a mouthwatering array of local delicacies, from fresh seafood to traditional Gozitan pastizzi.
    • Music: Live music will set the mood, with local bands and artists performing throughout the festival.
    • Wine Making Demonstrations: Ever wondered how wine is made? This is your chance to find out. Local winemakers will be giving live demonstrations of the wine-making process.

And the best part? The festival is held in Sannat’s main square, right in the heart of the village. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore this charming locality, with its narrow streets, historic churches, and stunning sea views.

So, mark your calendars, gather your friends and family, and get ready to raise a glass (or two) to Sannat’s sixth annual Wine Festival. Cheers!
