Armed Hold-Up Duo Jailed for 22 Years
Armed and Dangerous: The Convenience Shop Hold-Up Duo
Picture this: it’s a quiet Tuesday evening in Msida. The clock on the tower of the old parish church is ticking towards 9 pm. Suddenly, the peaceful scene is shattered. Two men, faces hidden, storm into a convenience shop on Triq San Pawl, brandishing guns. This wasn’t a scene from a Hollywood movie, but a chilling reality that left the local community shaken.
The Crime Spree
The two men, later identified as 35-year-old Mario Azzopardi and 28-year-old Daniel Muscat, embarked on a crime spree that would see them target three convenience stores in the space of a month. Armed with pistols, they would burst into the shops, threaten the staff and customers, and make off with cash and cigarettes.
The first hold-up occurred on that Tuesday evening in Msida. The second took place two weeks later in Birkirkara, and the third just a week after that in Żebbuġ. In each case, the duo managed to escape before the police could arrive, leaving behind a trail of fear and disbelief.
Caught in the Act
It was during their third heist that their luck ran out. A quick-thinking customer managed to snap a photo of the duo on his phone as they fled the scene. The image, shared with the police, proved to be their downfall. Within hours, officers had identified the suspects and raided their homes in Rabat and Ħamrun, recovering the stolen goods and the weapons used in the crimes.
When questioned, Azzopardi and Muscat confessed to the crimes. They were subsequently charged with armed robbery, theft, and using firearms to commit a crime. The court, taking into account the severity of the crimes and the fear caused to the victims, sentenced Azzopardi to 15 years in prison and Muscat to 7 years.
Community Reaction
The sentences have been welcomed by the local community. “We’re glad justice has been served,” said a Msida resident who wished to remain anonymous. “These men brought fear to our streets. Now, we can sleep a little easier knowing they’re behind bars.”
The incident has also sparked a conversation about the safety of convenience store staff and customers. The Malta Chamber of Commerce has called for increased security measures, while the police have reassured the public that they are committed to maintaining the safety of all residents.
As the judicial process comes to a close, the focus now turns to supporting the victims of these crimes. The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector is working with local charities to provide counseling services to those affected. Meanwhile, the police continue to patrol the streets, a visible reminder that justice will always prevail.
“We won’t let fear dictate our lives,” said another Msida resident. “We’ll continue to support our local shops and businesses, knowing that our community is strong and our police are vigilant.”
