Fast Ferry Connects Sliema, Buġibba & Gozo from May 5

Sailing into Summer: Fast Ferry to Connect Sliema, Buġibba, and Gozo from May 5

Ever dreamt of sipping a coffee at Sliema’s Tigne’ Point, then hopping on a ferry to soak up the sun at Buġibba’s Qawra Beach, before catching a sunset in Gozo’s Mgarr Harbour? This summer, that dream becomes a reality. On May 5, the new fast ferry service, operated by Virtu Ferries, will set sail, transforming the way we island-hop in Malta.

Speed and Comfort: What to Expect

The new service, running on the state-of-the-art catamaran ‘Virtu Freedom’, promises a swift and comfortable journey. With a capacity of 400 passengers, it will cut travel time between Sliema and Gozo to just 25 minutes, compared to the traditional 90-minute car ferry ride. The vessel, equipped with air-conditioned seating areas, a bar, and even Wi-Fi, ensures a pleasant crossing, whether you’re commuting or cruising.

Schedules and Routes: Plan Your Trip

The fast ferry will operate daily, with departures from Sliema’s Tigne’ Seafront at 7:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 4:30 PM, reaching Buġibba’s Qawra Point and Gozo’s Mgarr Harbour. Return journeys will depart from Mgarr at 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 5:00 PM, stopping at Qawra before heading back to Sliema. Timetables may vary on public holidays.

For those eager to explore Gozo, the fast ferry offers an attractive alternative to the traditional car ferry. With its central location, Sliema becomes an ideal starting point for day trips to the sister island. Whether you’re heading to the Azure Window, the Citadel, or just for a stroll along the Victoria streets, the fast ferry makes it easier than ever.

Impacts and Expectations: A New Era of Connectivity

The introduction of this service is expected to boost tourism, reduce travel times for commuters, and stimulate economic growth in both Malta and Gozo. With increased connectivity, we can anticipate a surge in day-trippers and overnight stays in Gozo, benefiting local businesses and the island’s economy.

However, the fast ferry also raises questions about traffic congestion in popular tourist spots like Sliema and Buġibba. Local councils and authorities will need to work together to manage increased footfall and ensure a smooth transition to this new era of connectivity.

Virtu Ferries CEO, Alex Muscat, expresses optimism about the new service, “We’re excited to offer a faster, more comfortable way to travel between Malta and Gozo. We believe this will not only benefit tourists but also Maltese residents, making island-hopping more convenient than ever.”
