Gozo PN Candidate Vows to Press On After Vandalism
Vandalism in the Name of Politics: Gozo’s PN Candidate Stands Firm
In the heart of Rabat, Gozo, a stark reminder of political tensions greeted residents and visitors alike this week. The banner of Nationalist Party (PN) candidate for the upcoming local council elections, Dr. Alex Muscat, was found vandalised, its message of ‘Progress with Respect’ defaced with black paint. Yet, Dr. Muscat isn’t backing down, stating, “I’m not scared. This won’t deter me from my mission.”
Political Tensions Rise Ahead of Elections
The incident comes amidst rising political tensions in Gozo, with the local council elections slated for June 5th. Both the PN and the Labour Party (PL) have been campaigning fervently, with each side accusing the other of dirty tactics. However, this act of vandalism has drawn a line in the sand, sparking condemnation from both sides.
“This is not the way to express political differences,” said PN’s deputy leader, David Agius, while Labour’s parliamentary secretary for Gozo, Justyne Caruana, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Such acts only serve to damage our democratic process.”
Community Reaction and Police Investigation
Locals in Rabat have been quick to condemn the act, with many taking to social media to express their disapproval. Josephine Borg, a Rabat resident, commented, “This is not what we stand for in Gozo. We deserve better.” The police have launched an investigation, with CCTV footage from the area being reviewed.
Dr. Muscat, undeterred, has vowed to continue his campaign, stating, “I won’t let this incident distract me from the issues that matter to the people of Gozo. We need progress, but we also need respect – for our island, our people, and our democratic process.”
As the elections draw near, all eyes are on Gozo. The island, known for its tranquility and rich history, is now at the centre of a political storm. But one thing is clear – the people of Gozo will not stand for intimidation or vandalism. They want their voice heard, and they want it heard peacefully.
