Malta’s Police: From Valletta to Lesbos

Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Valletta. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the Grandmaster’s Palace. Now, picture this: instead of patrolling these familiar streets, a group of Maltese police officers are thousands of miles away, on the shores of the Aegean Sea. This is not a scene from a movie, but a reality for our island’s law enforcement.

Malta, along with other EU member states, is part of Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. This European force, based in Warsaw, Poland, coordinates border management and immigration control. Malta’s contribution to Frontex has seen our officers deployed to various hotspots, including Greece.

Greece, with its extensive coastline and islands, has been on the frontline of the European migrant crisis. It’s here that Maltese officers have been conducting immigration patrols and rescues, working alongside their Greek and European counterparts.

Life for these officers is far removed from the everyday policing in Malta. Their days are spent on patrol boats, scanning the horizon for vessels in distress. They’ve rescued migrants from flimsy dinghies, pulled them from the water, and provided first aid in harrowing conditions.

But it’s not just about rescues. These officers are also involved in immigration control, checking documents, and ensuring the safety and security of all those involved. It’s a complex task, made more challenging by the language barriers and cultural differences.

One officer, who wished to remain anonymous, told us, “It’s tough. The conditions are harsh, and the work is demanding. But we’re making a difference. We’re saving lives and upholding the values of our force, and our country.”

While these officers are away, their colleagues back home continue to keep Malta safe. The Maltese police force, known for its professionalism and dedication, continues to serve our community, whether it’s patrolling the streets of Birkirkara or the shores of Lesbos.

This deployment is a testament to Malta’s commitment to European cooperation and our shared responsibility in managing migration. It’s also a reflection of the high regard in which our police force is held, both at home and abroad.

As one local resident told us, “We’re proud of our officers. They’re out there, representing Malta, making a difference. It’s not an easy job, but they’re doing it with courage and professionalism.”
