Three Injured, Including Child, in Back-to-Back Traffic Accidents

In the span of just 30 minutes this afternoon, two separate traffic accidents left three people, including a five-year-old girl, injured on Malta’s roads. The incidents, which occurred on the busy Triq San Gwann and Triq L-Imqabba, have once again raised concerns about road safety on the island.

First Accident: Triq San Gwann

The first accident occurred around 2:30 PM near the St. Julian’s roundabout on Triq San Gwann. A car, driven by a 32-year-old woman, collided with a motorcycle ridden by a 27-year-old man. The woman and the motorcyclist were both taken to Mater Dei Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses at the scene described the accident as a “nasty one,” with the motorcycle ending up on its side and the car sustaining significant damage to its front end. Traffic was heavy in the area, with many commuters heading home for the weekend.

Second Accident: Triq L-Imqabba

Just 30 minutes later, at around 3:00 PM, another accident occurred on Triq L-Imqabba in Msida. A car, driven by a 45-year-old woman, collided with a pedestrian, a five-year-old girl. The girl was crossing the road near the Msida Church when the accident occurred.

The girl was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, accompanied by her mother. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, but she was kept in for observation. The driver of the car was also taken to hospital for shock.

Residents in the area expressed their concern about the number of accidents occurring on Triq L-Imqabba, with some calling for traffic calming measures to be implemented. “It’s only a matter of time before something more serious happens,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

Road Safety Concerns

Today’s accidents have once again highlighted the ongoing issue of road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 1,000 road accidents so far this year, with 17 fatalities.

In response to today’s incidents, the Malta Police have reminded drivers to exercise caution on the roads, especially during peak traffic hours. “We urge all road users to drive responsibly and to always prioritize safety,” a spokesperson said.

Hot Malta has reached out to the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects for comment on today’s accidents and the broader issue of road safety in Malta. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
