Breaking Barriers: New €20,000 Grant Proposed for Disabled First-Time Buyers

Imagine the joy of unlocking your first home, a place to call your own. Now, picture the added challenge of doing so with a disability. This is the reality many Maltese face, but a new proposal aims to change that.

What’s the Proposal?

The Malta Developers Association (MDA) has proposed a €20,000 grant for first-time buyers with disabilities. This grant, if approved, would be a significant step towards making homeownership more accessible for all.

“We believe that everyone deserves a fair chance at owning their own home,” says Joseph P. Portelli, President of the MDA. “This proposal is about breaking down barriers and creating a more inclusive property market.”

How Will It Work?

The grant would be available to first-time buyers with a registered disability, purchasing a property from an MDA member. The €20,000 would be deducted from the property’s price, reducing the financial burden on the buyer.

“We’re not just giving away money,” explains Portelli. “We’re helping people get onto the property ladder, which is a significant investment in their future.”

Local Impact: A Street in Sliema

Let’s picture a bustling street in Sliema, where first-time buyers are out in force, checking out properties. Among them is Maria, a young woman with a visual impairment. With the proposed grant, Maria could afford a stylish, modern apartment in the heart of Sliema, something she never thought possible.

This isn’t just about one street or one town. It’s about creating a ripple effect across Malta, making homeownership a reality for more people with disabilities.

Next Steps and Public Consultation

The MDA is now in talks with the government to make this proposal a reality. A public consultation is also planned, giving everyone a chance to have their say.

“We want to hear from people with disabilities, their families, and the wider community,” says Portelli. “This is a chance to shape a more inclusive Malta.”
