Gene Simmons Brings Plane Disaster Movie to Malta

From Malta to Hollywood: Gene Simmons’ Plane Disaster Movie Takes Off

Imagine this: you’re sitting in your seat on a routine flight, when suddenly the pilot’s voice crackles over the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a problem…” This chilling scenario is the premise of ‘Stranded in the Sky’, a new movie produced by none other than Gene Simmons, the charismatic bassist and co-lead vocalist of the legendary rock band KISS.

Malta, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, has been the backdrop for numerous films and TV shows. Now, it’s set to play a role in this high-flying thriller, directed by Robert Lieberman and starring Sullivan Stapleton (‘Blindspot’, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’).

Gene Simmons: Malta’s Newest Filmmaker?

Gene Simmons, known for his flamboyant stage persona ‘The Demon’, is no stranger to the limelight. But producing a disaster movie is a departure from his usual rock ‘n’ roll antics. “I’ve always been fascinated by survival stories,” Simmons said in a recent interview. “And what better setting than a plane, trapped at 30,000 feet?”

Simmons visited Malta earlier this year to scout locations. He was reportedly impressed by the island’s diverse landscapes and production infrastructure. “Malta has this incredible mix of ancient and modern,” he said. “It’s perfect for our story.”

Malta’s Growing Film Industry

Malta’s film industry is booming. With its generous tax incentives, English-speaking crew, and diverse locations, it’s become a magnet for international productions. Recent hits like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘World War Z’, and ‘By the Sea’ (starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt) have all been filmed here.

Local film commission Malta Film Commission has been instrumental in attracting these productions. “We’re thrilled to have Gene Simmons and ‘Stranded in the Sky’ join our list of high-profile projects,” said Malta Film Commission CEO, Jonathan Attard.

Malta’s film industry contributes significantly to the local economy. According to the Malta Film Commission, it generated €50 million in 2020, supporting over 1,000 jobs.

What’s Next for ‘Stranded in the Sky’?

‘Stranded in the Sky’ is currently in pre-production, with filming expected to start later this year. Locations include the historic city of Mdina, the rugged cliffs of Dingli, and the modernist architecture of Valletta’s City Gate.

Gene Simmons is tight-lipped about the plot details, but he promises a tense, suspenseful ride. “It’s not just about survival,” he teases. “It’s about what people will do to survive.”

As for Malta, the film industry continues to soar. With ‘Stranded in the Sky’ joining its roster, the island is set to deliver another blockbuster performance.
