Malta’s 2023 Elections: Early Voting Dates Announced
Early Birds: Electoral Commission Unveils Voting Plans for Malta’s 2023 Elections
Malta’s electoral scene is gearing up for change as the Electoral Commission has just announced early voting arrangements for the upcoming 2023 General Election. As the sun set over the historic Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta, the Commission’s office released details that will allow voters to cast their ballots before polling day.
Mark Your Calendars: Early Voting Dates and Times
The Electoral Commission has set aside three days for early voting: Friday, 17th March, and Saturday and Sunday, 18th and 19th March. Voting will take place from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM on these days. This year, the Commission has extended the early voting period by an extra day, giving voters more opportunities to exercise their democratic right.
Early voting will take place at the same venues as the regular polls. So, if you’re a resident of Msida, for instance, you’ll head to the same polling station at the Msida Community Hall on Triq l-Indipendenza where you’d go on polling day.
Why Early Voting Matters
Early voting isn’t just about convenience; it’s about ensuring everyone gets a chance to vote. It’s particularly beneficial for voters who might face challenges on polling day, such as those with mobility issues, shift workers, or students studying abroad. It also helps manage queues and spread out the voting process, making it a smoother experience for everyone.
Dr. Joe Gerada, a political scientist at the University of Malta, explains, “Early voting is a step towards making our democracy more inclusive. It’s about making sure that everyone who wants to vote can, regardless of their circumstances.”
How to Vote Early: A Step-by-Step Guide
To vote early, you’ll need to present your identification card or passport at the polling station. If you’re voting in a different constituency from where you’re registered, you’ll need to provide proof of address in that constituency. Once you’re at the polling station, the process is the same as on polling day:
- Present your ID.
- Receive your ballot paper.
- Mark your X next to your preferred candidate(s).
- Fold your ballot paper and place it in the ballot box.
And that’s it! You’ve just helped shape Malta’s political future.
With these early voting arrangements in place, Malta is set to see a higher turnout in the 2023 General Election. So, whether you’re a first-time voter or a seasoned participant, make sure to mark those early voting dates in your calendar. After all, every vote counts in shaping our nation’s future.
