Malta’s Early Voting Arrangements Revealed

Early Birds: Electoral Commission Unveils Voting Arrangements

Imagine this: it’s a sunny morning in Msida, the day before the election. You’re sipping your coffee, watching the world wake up from your balcony. Suddenly, you remember – you’re one of the 10,000+ Maltese eligible for early voting. But where and when? The Electoral Commission has just announced the details, and here’s what you need to know.

What’s Early Voting and Who’s Eligible?

Early voting, or advance voting, is a chance to cast your ballot before election day. This year, it’s open to anyone who can’t make it to the polls on 26 March due to work, studies, or health reasons. That’s around 10,000 Maltese, according to the Electoral Commission.

If you’re a student studying abroad, a seafarer, or a member of the Armed Forces, you’re automatically eligible. So are those with a disability, or anyone who’ll be out of Malta on election day. But remember, you’ve got to apply by 15 March.

Where and When Can You Vote Early?

The Electoral Commission has set up five early voting stations across Malta and Gozo. Here’s the lowdown:

    • Malta: St. George’s Hall, Floriana (19-23 March, 9 am – 7 pm)
    • Gozo: Victoria City Council Hall, Republic Street, Victoria (20-23 March, 9 am – 7 pm)
    • Students Abroad: Malta High Commission, London (20-23 March, 9 am – 5 pm)
    • Seafarers and Armed Forces: Maltese Embassies and Consulates worldwide (20-23 March, check specific timings)

Remember, you’ll need your ID card or passport to vote. And if you’re voting abroad, you’ll need to apply for a postal vote by 15 March.

Why Bother with Early Voting?

Early voting is a chance to beat the queues and the last-minute rush. It’s also a way to ensure your voice is heard, especially if you’re one of the many Maltese living or studying abroad. Plus, it’s a chance to make your democratic duty a little less stressful.

So, there you have it. No more excuses for not voting. Now, who’s ready to make their mark early?
