Early Birds: Electoral Commission Unveils Voting Arrangements

Imagine the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, the heart of Malta’s capital, on a quiet Sunday morning. That’s the scene the Electoral Commission is painting for voters this year, as they announce early voting arrangements for the upcoming local council elections.

What’s the Deal with Early Voting?

In a bid to boost voter turnout and accommodate busy schedules, the Electoral Commission has introduced early voting. This isn’t a new concept, but it’s the first time it’s being used for local council elections in Malta.

Early voting will take place on Sunday, 12th March, and the following Saturday, 18th March. The venues and timings are designed to make it easy for everyone to cast their vote. Think of it as a weekend market, but instead of buying fresh produce, you’re exercising your democratic right.

Where and When?

Here’s the lowdown on the early voting locations and timings:

  • Sunday, 12th March: 9 am to 1 pm at the following venues in each district:
      • Attard: St. Mary’s Church Hall
      • Birkirkara: St. Helen’s School
      • Floriana: St. Publius Square (near the Granaries)
      • Mosta: St. George’s Square
      • Qormi: St. Sebastian’s Church Hall
      • Zebbug: St. Philip’s Church Hall
  • Saturday, 18th March: 9 am to 1 pm at the following venues in each district:
      • Birkirkara: St. Helen’s School
      • Mosta: St. George’s Square
      • Qormi: St. Sebastian’s Church Hall
      • Zebbug: St. Philip’s Church Hall
      • New venues: Msida (St. Francis Church Hall) and Rabat (St. Paul’s Church Hall)

Who’s Eligible?

Early voting is open to all registered voters, regardless of whether they’re on the electoral roll or not. It’s a chance to beat the rush and avoid the last-minute scramble. So, if you’re planning to vote early, make sure to have your ID card with you.

For those who can’t make it to the early voting sessions, don’t worry. Regular voting will take place on Monday, 20th March, from 7 am to 10 pm at your designated polling station.

So, there you have it, folks. The Electoral Commission is rolling out the red carpet for early voters. It’s your chance to make your voice heard in the quiet of a Sunday morning or the calm of a Saturday. No more excuses, Malta. Let’s get out there and vote!
