Malta’s Villages Get Artistic Makeover

Villages Unveiled: A New Lens on Malta’s Rural Charm

Imagine strolling through the narrow, sun-kissed streets of Żebbuġ, a village nestled in the heart of Malta. Now, imagine those same streets transformed into an open-air art gallery, with every wall, doorway, and window frame telling a story. This is not a fantasy, but a reality thanks to ‘Villages Unveiled’, an innovative arts project that’s inviting the public to see Malta’s rural beauty in a whole new light.

Reimagining Rural Spaces

‘Villages Unveiled’ is the brainchild of local artist and project coordinator, Mario Cassar. The initiative aims to revitalize Malta’s rural villages by using art as a catalyst for change. “Our villages are treasure troves of history and culture,” says Cassar. “But many of these stories are hidden behind closed doors. ‘Villages Unveiled’ is about opening those doors, quite literally, and inviting everyone to explore and appreciate our rural heritage.”

The project, funded by the Malta Arts Council, is transforming public spaces in Żebbuġ, Qrendi, and Dingli into vibrant art installations. From murals that tell the village’s history to interactive sculptures that engage passersby, each artwork is a unique interpretation of the village’s character, created by local artists.

Art in Action

In Żebbuġ, for instance, artist Emma Farrugia has painted a stunning mural on the facade of a historic building. The artwork depicts scenes from the village’s past, from traditional crafts like lace-making to the arrival of the British in 1800. “It’s a visual timeline of Żebbuġ’s history,” explains Farrugia. “I wanted to create something that would make people stop, look, and think about their village’s past.”

Meanwhile, in Qrendi, artist Andrew Borg has installed a series of interactive sculptures made from recycled materials. “I wanted to create something that would engage people, especially children,” says Borg. “Art shouldn’t just be something you look at. It should be something you can touch, play with, and interact with.”

Getting Involved

‘Villages Unveiled’ is not just about creating art; it’s about involving the community. Each village has its own committee, made up of local residents, who work alongside the artists to ensure the projects reflect their community’s unique identity. “This is not art imposed on the village,” says Cassar. “It’s art created with the village.”

The project also includes educational workshops, guided tours, and community events. “We want to make art accessible to everyone,” says Cassar. “Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just someone who loves their village, there’s something here for you.”

So, if you’re looking for a new way to explore Malta’s rural charm, grab your walking shoes and head to ŻebbuĒĦ, Qrendi, or Dingli. But don’t just walk through these villages – look at them, really look at them. Because with ‘Villages Unveiled’, every wall has a story, every street has a secret, and every corner has a surprise. And who knows? You might just see your village in a whole new light.
