SEC Exams in Limbo: June 1 Date Under Fire
Exam Season in Limbo: SEC’s June 1 Date Under Fire
Imagine this: it’s late May, the sun is out, and the streets of Msida are buzzing with students cramming for their SEC exams. But this year, there’s a different vibe. Whispers of postponement fill the air, not just because of the pandemic, but due to something else entirely – elections.
The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) has called for a rethink of the SEC exams scheduled for June 1. Their concern? The upcoming local council elections on May 23 might disrupt the exam season, leaving students in a lurch. Let’s look this rare situation.
Election Day Blues
The MCST’s worry is not unfounded. With the elections falling just a week before the SEC exams, many students are worried about potential disruptions. Remember the 2020 general election? Polling stations were set up in schools, causing chaos and anxiety for students. This time around, the MCST wants to avoid a repeat.
“We cannot afford to have our students’ future jeopardized by election-related disruptions,” said a spokesperson for the MCST. “We urge the authorities to reconsider the exam dates.”
SEC Students: Caught in the Crossfire
SEC students are not the only ones affected. Teachers and invigilators are also caught in the middle. Many are involved in the election process, leaving them torn between their professional duties and their civic responsibilities.
Take Mr. Camilleri, a math teacher at St. Aloysius College. “I’ve been asked to invigilate on election day. But I also have students sitting for SEC exams. It’s a tough spot to be in,” he said.
What’s Next?
The MCST has proposed alternative dates for the SEC exams, pushing them back to mid-June. But the final call lies with the Ministry of Education. Education Minister, Evarist Bartolo, has promised a decision soon, stating, “We understand the concerns and are looking into possible solutions.”
Meanwhile, students are left in limbo, their futures hanging in the balance. “We just want some clarity,” said Maria, a SEC student from St. Martin’s College. “We’ve been through so much already. We deserve some stability.”
As the election date looms, one thing is clear: the SEC exam season is far from business as usual. The question is, will the authorities listen to the call to reconsider the June 1 exam date? .
