Two Women and Girl, 5, Injured: A Tale of Two Accidents on Malta’s Roads

It was a chilling scene on Tuesday evening as two separate traffic accidents left three women and a five-year-old girl injured on Malta’s roads. The first incident occurred at around 6:30 PM near the Triq il-Mitħna in Birkirkara, while the second took place just an hour later in Qawra.

Birkirkara: A Close Call for a Young Girl

The first accident involved a five-year-old girl who was hit by a car while crossing the road with her mother. The incident occurred near the busy Birkirkara street, Triq il-Mitħna, which is known for its bustling shops and restaurants. The girl sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where she remains in a stable condition.

Witnesses reported that the driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, was visibly shaken after the incident. “It happened so fast,” said a nearby shopkeeper who wished to remain anonymous. “The mother was holding her daughter’s hand, but the little one slipped away and ran onto the road.”

Qawra: A Late Evening Crash

Just an hour later, another accident occurred in Qawra, this time involving two women in their 30s. The incident happened at the intersection of Triq il-Kappillan Sant, a popular spot for evening strolls due to its proximity to the seafront. Both women sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene before being taken to Mater Dei Hospital for further checks.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by a driver who failed to yield at the intersection. “It was a scary moment,” said a local resident. “I heard the screeching of tires and then a loud bang. It could have been much worse.”

Road Safety: A Growing Concern

These incidents have once again raised concerns about road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there have been over 1,000 road accidents in the first six months of this year, with many involving pedestrians and cyclists.

“We need to do more to educate drivers and pedestrians about road safety,” said Dr. Maria Attard, a road safety expert. “We need to make our roads safer, not just for cars, but for everyone.”

: A Call for Change

, it’s crucial that we address the underlying issues that contribute to these accidents. This means investing in infrastructure, educating drivers and pedestrians, and enforcing traffic laws. Let’s make our roads safer, not just for ourselves, but for our children and future generations.

“We owe it to our children to make our roads safer,” said Dr. Attard. “Let’s work together to make this happen.”
