Two Women and Girl, 5, Injured in Separate Traffic Accidents

Yesterday, two separate traffic accidents left three women and a five-year-old girl injured, highlighting the ongoing road safety concerns in Malta.

First Incident: Triq San Gwann

The first accident occurred around 10:30 AM on Triq San Gwann, Birkirkara. A 35-year-old woman was crossing the street with her daughter when a car, driven by a 45-year-old man, failed to yield at the zebra crossing. The woman sustained minor injuries, while her daughter, aged five, was taken to Mater Dei Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Witnesses reported that the car was traveling at a high speed. “I’ve seen many cars speeding down this street,” said a local resident, “It’s only a matter of time before something worse happens.”

Second Incident: Triq il-Kbira, Zebbug

Later in the afternoon, another accident occurred on Triq il-Kbira, Zebbug. A 55-year-old woman was riding her bicycle when she was struck by a van driven by a 35-year-old man. The woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital.

This stretch of road is known for its narrow lanes and heavy traffic. “We’ve been asking for a cycling lane here for years,” said a local shopkeeper, “But nothing has changed. It’s dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians alike.”

Road Safety Concerns in Malta

These accidents have once again raised concerns about road safety in Malta. According to the Malta Police, there were 2,500 road traffic accidents in 2020, with 30 fatalities. Speeding, distracted driving, and lack of infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians are among the main issues.

Local NGOs and residents have been calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, better road infrastructure, and increased public awareness. “We need to make our roads safer for everyone,” said a spokesperson for the Malta Road Safety Council, “Especially for our children and the elderly.”

Malta’s Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, Ian Borg, has acknowledged the issue and pledged to improve road safety. “We are working on various projects to improve road infrastructure and enhance safety measures,” he said.

In the meantime, residents are urging caution on the roads. “We all have a responsibility to drive safely and look out for each other,” said a Birkirkara resident. “Let’s make sure no one else gets hurt.”
