Żaren Fights to Save Historic Tal-Ajkla Building

Hope Springs Eternal in Żaren as ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ Campaign Launches

In the heart of Żaren, a small yet resilient community, a spark of hope ignites. The village square, usually buzzing with the humdrum of daily life, now echoes with a different tune. It’s the rhythm of determination, the melody of unity, as residents and supporters gather around a simple yet powerful banner: ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ – ‘We won’t do anything without Tal-Ajkla’.

The Heart of the Matter: Tal-Ajkla’s Fate

Tal-Ajkla, a historic building in Żaren, stands as a symbol of the village’s rich heritage. Once a thriving social hub, it now lies in disrepair, its future uncertain. The building, which houses Żaren’s local council offices, has been closed since 2018 due to structural issues. The community fears that if left unattended, Tal-Ajkla could be lost forever, taking with it a piece of Żaren’s identity.

This fear has galvanized the community into action. Led by local councilor and Żaren native, Joseph Muscat (not to be confused with the former Prime Minister), residents have launched a campaign to save Tal-Ajkla. Their mission? To restore the building to its former glory and ensure it remains a vital part of Żaren’s present and future.

A Village United: Żaren’s Campaign for Tal-Ajkla

The ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ campaign is more than just a call to action. It’s a testament to Żaren’s community spirit. From the elderly who recall Tal-Ajkla’s heyday to the young who dream of a vibrant future, everyone has a stake in this fight. The campaign has seen an outpouring of support, with residents organizing petitions, public meetings, and even a social media blitz.

One initiative that’s caught the eye is the ‘Tal-Ajkla in Our Hearts’ art project. Local students and artists have been creating artworks inspired by the building, with the aim of showcasing them in a community exhibition. The project not only raises awareness but also engages Żaren’s youth in their cultural heritage.

Żaren’s campaign has also caught the attention of local authorities and heritage organizations. The Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government has pledged its support, promising to explore funding options for Tal-Ajkla’s restoration. The Malta Council of Volunteering has also stepped in, offering to help coordinate volunteers for the project.

As the campaign gains momentum, Żaren’s residents remain steadfast in their mission. They’ve proven that when it comes to their heritage, they won’t back down. As Joseph Muscat puts it, “Żaren is more than just a village. It’s a community, a family. And like any family, we stand together to protect what’s ours.”

So, what’s next for Żaren and Tal-Ajkla? The community awaits the results of a structural survey, which will determine the extent of the building’s damage and the cost of repairs. But regardless of the findings, one thing is clear: Żaren won’t rest until Tal-Ajkla stands tall and proud once more.

If you’d like to support Żaren’s campaign, you can sign the petition at Change.org, follow their progress on Facebook (@TalAjklaRestoration), or contact Żaren Local Council for more information.
