Żaren Launches ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ Campaign

Hope Springs Eternal in Żaren as ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ Campaign Launches

In the heart of Żaren, a small yet spirited village in the north of Malta, a group of locals have come together, armed with posters, paint, and an unyielding spirit of optimism. Their mission? To breathe new life into their community with the launch of the ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ (We won’t do nothing with Tal-Ajkla) campaign.

Tal-Ajkla, a once-thriving square in Żaren, has seen better days. Its once-vibrant shops now stand empty, and its central fountain, a symbol of the village’s past glory, lies dormant. But the residents of Żaren aren’t ready to let their heritage fade away. They’re rolling up their sleeves, ready to transform Tal-Ajkla into a bustling hub once again.

Revitalising Żaren’s Heart

The ‘Ma tagħmlu xejn ma’ Tal-Ajkla’ campaign is the brainchild of Żaren resident and local businessman, Joseph Camilleri. “Tal-Ajkla is the heart of Żaren,” he says, “and it’s about time we gave it the love and care it deserves. We won’t stand by and let it decay any further.”

The campaign, launched last week, has already seen an outpouring of support from Żaren’s residents. Volunteers have been painting murals on the shutters of empty shops, transforming them into works of art that tell the story of Żaren’s past and present. Meanwhile, local businesses have pledged to offer discounts and promotions to encourage more footfall in the area.

From Tal-Ajkla to the World

But the campaign’s ambitions don’t stop at Żaren’s borders. The group has also launched an online petition, calling on local authorities to invest in the regeneration of Tal-Ajkla. They’re pushing for improved infrastructure, more green spaces, and better facilities to attract visitors and businesses alike.

“This isn’t just about Żaren,” says campaign coordinator, Maria Xuereb. “It’s about showing the rest of Malta that small villages matter. That they deserve investment and attention. We want Tal-Ajkla to become a destination, a place where people from all over the island come to enjoy our unique culture and heritage.”

And the campaign is already gaining traction. It’s been featured on local news outlets, and even caught the eye of Malta’s Minister for Gozo and Local Government, who has pledged to visit Żaren to see the campaign’s progress firsthand.
